Processor RAM limits

I've heard that certain processors have limits for the amount of RAM and after you exceed the amount, performance will decrease. Is this true? If so, what is the limit for AMD k6-2s? I am asking this because I just added some RAM to my system and I'm getting lower framerates.

In your case the Cacheability of the ram is dependant upon the chipset used in your board and once you exceede that limit your performance will drip. For example. Intel TX could cache up to 64MB and once you got past that (installed more Ram) you took a performance hit when you addressed memory about 64MB. The Intel TX could address up to 256MB although all Intel processors since the 386 could address up to 2GB interally and only the chipset used determines the physical limit

Chipset Max Ram Cache limit

Intel HX 512MB 64MB or 512MB depending upon tag ram size
Intel TX 256MB 64MB
Intel BX 1000MB Dependant upon processor

Every processor with a 32 bit addres bus which is I think 486 and up can access up to 4 gigabytes of ram. Most chipsets will only support or have limited ammount of slots to support 1.5gigs or less.

So, do you know what the cause of my performance decrease is and know how to fix it?

I have a GA-GA-5SMM motherboard with the latest BIOS.

What brand is the second stick that you used???? it may be that you used some pc66 spec ram and it dropped you down to a slower FSB. just a guess????

from what i have read and understand, the sis530/5595 chipset (which your motherboard uses) is available with "up to" 2meg L2 cache (512k, 1meg, or 2meg) and can cache "up to" 256megs of ram. i'm pretty sure the 512k L2 versions can only cache up to 128megs. i don't know what the performance drop is supposed to be with more ram, nor do i know a workaround (sorry). exactly how many fps are you losing with the extra ram? you might want to post this in a k6 board also (here is a decent one)

I'm losing about 5 frames per second in Quake 3 and 4 in Quake 2. I know it doesn't seem like much, but because I'm a lowender, I need all the fps I can get.
