Processor quite hot

I finally have my system up, now that I got the video card, but the processor is running at 55C after some gaming and stays around 51C normally (41 in case). Should I do something or worry?

EDIT: AMD Athlon 1600+
Gigabyte GA-7vtxe
256 DDR Crucial
Visiontek Geforce 3 Ti 200

Please list some specs...

1)processor and speed

2)any ocing

3)motherboard

4)method of temperature reading...ie bios or software

5)case fan situation
 
Really? Oh, thank you, that makes me feel much better. (This is not sarcasm) I guess they just run hot. I am using the heatsink that came w/ the retail (prolly not best, but if it fails me, its their fault).
 

take it easy, sure you could spend some more money on better cooling and lower the temps, but who cares.
i would rather let the system run a bit hotter than have some "recommended" cooler with 7000rpm that sounds as if a jet takes off.

sure, if you start feeling uncomfortable about your temps, there are ways to cool the cpu significantly without having to bear noise, it's just a question of how much money you're willing to spend 😉.

but as i said, you'll be doing fine with the stock HSF.
 
No, that seems pretty warm--especially if you're not OCed. Your mobo temp seems to be very, very, very warm

That tells me that there is a severe lack of air circulation inside your case. How many case fans do you have and how are they blowing in relation to your case? What heatsink are you using? What fan are you using for your heatsink??
 
I have the PS fan (enlight 7237 new egg link ), which is quite weak, so I moved the included fan to one of the back openings too. It was in front, but the holes on the front are small. I have one of the drive bay covers off to allow for ambient air. The Heatsink fan is part of the stock Athlon deal. Gigabytes might have high temps, but I dont really know. Everything seems to be fine...
 
My Giga-Byte GA7DXR with a 1.2 tbird runs in that range as well. I have a Thermaltake Volcano III hsf on it and have tried 3 cpus so far , still warm. IMHO its just the way the Giga-Byte boards are 🙂
 
I don't think those temps are unsafe for your cpu or case temp. But MasterHoss made a good point that i didn't realize, that is your case temp is over 105F. That is very hot for ambient case temperature. My case temp rarely gets over 75F and thats with the room temp at 70F. but my cpu still runs over 150F most the time........

how warm do you usually keep the room? is the system stuffed in a desk or something?
 
well it isnt stuffed or anything, and the room is quite cool actually. (About 70F I'd say) It must be that the temps are wrong, but also, I need to organize the cables. THey are a bit stuffed, but I bet it also has to do with the mobo

can you use another method to determine the actually case temp, like an indoor/outdoor thermometer? Does the exhaust air feel hot?
 
Ok, well, the air did feel hot, but I expected that somewhat, since the fan is near the processor, and also, the fan was originally in front, but the holes for the air are so small, so I moved the fan to the back and I have 2 drive bays open in front. It was running hot still, but just a bit ago, I decided to clean up some of the cables and such. JEEZ, the temps dropped to 49 Core and 35 inside. Woo hoo! I can now see a straight line through from drive bays to back fan, I dunno it it is good, but it passes right by the heatsink, so it should pull away that hot air.

Another question: Is standard black electrical tape okay to be inside the case (thats what I used to hold the cables down) Can it withstand the temp? Is it okay to have some on the PS box (I assume it is okay, but I just dont want that tape to melt and fry everything)

EDIT: If you want to know, the retail Athlon heatsink fan runs at 4440rpm...hey at least its quite

I have the same motherboard and almost the same processor (1700+)

Those temps don't seem to be outrageously hot... I know some people will tell you that is too warm but that's about what mine was at. No real danger in those temps.

I am wondering, since you have the 266a chipset correct? Have you done the tweak located over at tweak3d.net? (I'm sure it can be found elsewhere, I don't know of elsewhere)

After doing that tweak my idle temp for my processor dropped 17 degrees, it really helps out, I encourage this tweak
 
I am going to leave it on constantly and the constant temps are 49C core and 36C case (moving those ribbon cables out of the way helped a lot). Are those high for a constant temperature. People say that turning off is bad, but what about leaving the computer on with high temps? Wouldn't that also shorten the life of components?

EDIT: Sorry, but i just worry, especially since this beast is my new love. I just built it from christmas and I dont want anything to hurt it...Us AT members and our computers
 
I have a Volcano II which runs at 4500rpms and I have a K7 1.33ghz, which runs hotter than the XP models, and I get ~51 under full load, ~47 under normal. (during the summer time the temps might go up a few degrees higher).
 
those temperatures are fine by all means, but if you're paranoid for some odd reason, try adding an exhaust fan directly behind the cpu...most cases can accomodate an 80mm case fan...if yours can't, you can always try a pci slot cooler (which are often extremely quiet as well).

i personally wouldn't waste the money, since the max. tolerance is ~90 celcius (i believe) for athlon xps...in fact, i always have my cpus run quite hot because i use the quitest cooling methods possible (often HSFs not recommended for that speed of cpu)...and cuz i'm cheap.
