processor question

how good is a pentium 4 3.2 ghz processor for gaming. It has HT but no 64 bit.

All the other componens aren't real bottlenecks...6800gt, 2 gb pc 3200 ddr, 10k raptor, audisgy 2 zs (xfi once its out)...i875 mobo.

I'm just wondering how good the CPU is considered for gaming when everything else is out of the equation. Games such as Battlefield 2, Doom 3, HL 2, F.E.A.R and future games all which I feel are more GPU intensive.

tnx

It would be alright, but a AMD Athlon 64 3200 would be much, much better. Is there any way that you can switch to AMD, or are you buying pre-built?

While it's pretty clear that the AMD CPU's are preferable for gaming, I think you're just fine. That's plenty of CPU for the 6800GT. IMHO, the only diff between it and an a64 are going to be benchmarks. Real world gaming performance is going to be negligiable.

And I agree that for those games, the GPU is what is important.

Thanks a lot for the useful replies!

Yeah I have an extra Northwood 3.2 sitting around and was wondering if using it in a rig would be worth it. Currently im on an AXP 2800+ so I doubt id see much improvement...but it would be a good second computer.

My true main rig I kept at college in storage b/c im stoopid 🙂 ...thats an A64 3800+ Venice with an X800XT AIW and 2 GB Ram. How I miss it 🙂

The 64bit-ness is a moot point currently, and the 3.2NW would be quite a bit faster than you AXP 2800+, so it would be quite an improvement on CPU limited games such as UT2004 and probably Doom3/HL2. In fact, I'd say you'd see an all round improvement in gaming, as well as everyday tasks, over your current system.
