Processor overheating, where it never used to

I just built a new system today (Althon 2400+, Asus A7N8X-deluxe, etc) , runs great.

Anyway, my old system is, a Althon 750, which I didn't change, except for removing the new vid card I put in it (ATI 8500) and putting back in the old GF2MX (it doesn't seem to gen. much heat at all).

Well, now today, I'm trying to do a fresh install of XP on the old system, and even while trying to install Windows (or even just left in prompt for a while), the cpu heat alarm goes on, and I have to restart or it will do it for me (for good reason ofcourse.)

I checked , the power and cpu fan are still operating normally, could there be anything else I could check?

Thanks

note, this cpu is not overclocked, and it is using the retail heatsink/fan.

The motherboard settings for temp. monitoring are default (65 C for alarm, 70 C for shutdown, can't set them much higher).

Thanks

Also, it says that the power fan is like running ~5000 RPm, but the CPU fan is 0 rpm.

Now, I verfiyed that the fan that's on the case of the processor is what my motherboard is calling the "power fan", perhaps because of the way it's hooked up, there's not supposed to be another cpu fan is there? :)

What? The case of the processor?

There should be at least 1 fan in the power supply (possibly 2), and one fan on the processor.

Oh, I don't know what you want to call it, the retail Althon 750 literally looks like it has a mini case built around it, I'm probably just using incorrect terminology.

I'm just monitoring the temp in the bios.. it's been running for about 1/2 hr now doing nothing really, and it's hovering at 60C (only 5 C below the alarm.) that's pretty high.. Ofcourse, it probably has always been running about this hot, I just never bothered to look till now since the alarm went off a couple times..

There power fan is running, along with the cpu fan. :)

Remember it is summer time and the ambient room temp is higher.

Oh, you have one of the slot A processors. Black plastic casing right? Yeah... Intel started a horrible trend with those, and unfortunately AMD followed suit. But fortunately, both realized socket processors were much better and switched back.

Heh summertime means different things to different folks. Its a balmy 43F here in Milwaukee with a high of 65 expected tomorrow.

I'm not complaining mind you. I dread the 90's that are sure to come.

It sounds like a fan is failing or your heatsink shifted causing it to lose contact with the die. I would follow shimsham's advice and reseat the heatsink. Also have you cleaned the heatsink and case lately it might have some dust buildup. good luck.
