Processor Hypothetical: Which is Better?

Assuming, of course, that bus*multiplier = constant CPU speed. Which is better, and is it a substantial (i.e. noticeable) difference?

if anything, higher fsb and lower multi for the same speed would be faster as it would give you greater memory bandwidth. usually, though, the difference is negligible, especially for athlon 64's (i can't comment on C2D's as I don't have one, but my understanding is that they don't benefit much either).

So in your opinion it probably ain't worth $60 to go from a P4 2.8GHz @ 533MHz FSB to a P4 2.8GHz @800MHz? :)

oh no, definitely not, especially if you're not overclocking. $60 can get you an athlon6 4 x2 3600. either one of its cores at stock speed would decimate either of those chips, and it usually can overclock by about 1GHz.

Haha, aye, the trick there is making it fit in the LGA 775 slot. :p

I can just trim it to fit, right? ;)

In theory it should be the higher fsb and thus higher memory bandwidth...However C2Ds as well as the A64's dont seem to be too bottlenecked with bandwidth....

the tangible benefit ofcourse is the higher fsb if ran in conjunction with higher speed ram will result in faster speed in applications that take advantage of memory bandwidth and speed

for another 50ish bucks you've got yourself a e4300, that would DEFINATELY be worth it.

Is this thread hypothetical or not?

If you're really asking about upgrading to a P4 2.8, the answer is obviously to save your money for an upgrade that counts. You can get a new mobo + cpu combo for not too much more than $60... just save up a few pennies more.

nope

not unless you are an OC'er ... and you should try it ... 3.2G is almost "guaranteed" for the 2.80c ... and noticeable in games [especially]

the only substantial upgrade that will probably fir your MB is an Extreme Edition P4 3.4Ghz ... i bought one for $115 before my C2D upgrade and it is substantial over even an OC'd 2.80c

those northwoods are socket 478 chips, i'd like to see you fit one of those in an lga 775 socket ;)
