Processor for gaming: AMD or Intel

I was going through this with a freind of mine on the weekend. I've read a few articles on various sites about the processing power between AMD Athlon 64 processors and Intel Pentium 4 processors.

AMD was always on top, it seems to be the stronger processor. But when i was talking about it with my friend, who is quite a bit more knowledgable when it comes to... pretty much everything about PCs told me to go with the Intel.

I was wondering if you guys might be able to sway my decision for the coming months one way or the other.

Before the haze of doubt my friend put in my head, i was leaning towards the AMD Athlon 64 32/3400+ processors.

Thanks in advance for what you have to tell me.

unless you move up to EE, the AMDs beat the intels in games :)

at the FX and EE level which is better is somewhat debatable

This is a classic AMD vs. Intel thread.

I build and work with both brands of cpu. They are both very fine.

However, I'm running a 3Ghz+ HT P4 on my personal system and frankly unless the P4EE or AMD-X5x chips get real cheap real soon I am sticking with the HT P4.

If all you care about is gaming performance, the Athlon 64 is definitely the way to go. It gets beaten out by the P4 in things like some rendering and most media encoding, but for raw gaming power, the Athlon is king. If you also care about those other applications, it is by no means a slow processor, just not quite as fast as the HT P4s. The K8 made big strides there from the k7. From what you describe of your usage profile, I would definitely go with the Athlon.

AMD all the way...

Point your buddy to Anandtech's Athlon64 reviews and let the gaming benchmarks speak for themselves...

in this order imo:

P3
Athlon xp
P4c (northwood with HT)
athlon fx/ athlon64 / P4ee

i would probably want the athlon fx over the p4ee if given the choice
but the p4ee has lotsa cache for non-game things :)
the athlon fx has the integrated memory controller and hypertransport etc tho
mmmm

Pretty much any Athlon64 is a gaming monster, 2800+ all the way up to FX-53, when compared to their Intel counterparts.
