how's it goin everyone??

i'm running an open case right now and my system temp is 30c but my cpu is running at 45-48c and is peaking at 53-55 when i run games and stuff.... I'm on a 1.4 t-bird with retail heatsink/fan (ok, don't laugh) and i noticed that the fan is blowing counterclockwise..therefore sucking in air. I proved this to myself by holding a piece of paper up to it and watching it cling to the fan (for a second). I currently have a fan in the front of the case blowing air in, and the power supply is of course sucking air out. is this normal? doesnt make any sense to me...

okay, i'm trying to picture this and it seems like you have it on the right way...the fan should be blowing air towards your HSF...so if it's sucking the paper in...it's doing the job properly...correct me if i'm wrong on this.
 
thx for the response guys...at least i know the fan is working correctly...but does the AMD retail hsf/fan just plain suck?? i mean, my case is open and i'm running high temps. is it worth spending the $$ and switching the hsf/fan? or will another fan in the back of the case really make a difference??
 
The HSF would make a greater difference then the fan in the back...the fan in the back is primarily for an exhaust...just to suck some of that hot air out...but seeing that you have your case open, then i wouldn't say that it's all that necessary to have a fan in the back with a side opened case. Your temps are a lil high but don't stress too much unless you start getting stability problems. Also, you would definately need another HSF if you were to OC.
 
thing is, i'm headin back to school, and this case is definitely going to be closed. i know the temp is going to rise just with the cover on, let alone running something intense like Max Payne.

what's really bothersome i guess is the big difference in system temp and chip temp...

system is at 29
chip is at 45 right now (sometimes higher)

15 degrees seems a little high. i hope i'm not being too paranoid, the only way i could bring temp down is to keep a house fan next to the open case or bring my pc down to the basement..hehe.
 
My Althlon AXIA 1GHz, currently running at 1430 (as high as my Motherboard will go, but i'm sure the chip has a lot more in it 🙂), 1.85V, is sitting at about 58C under full load, which i feel is an OK temp for the prcessor. the only way u will get the CPU temp closer to the ambient temp with a CPU that fast is water cooling!!

Why is everyone so 'down' on retail heatsink/fan combos?
If it can't cool the CPU adequately, why would AMD slap it on? So
that they can flush money down the drain by servicing burnt out
processors? In short, don't worry about it unless you're planning on
running the CPU at higher speed.

Remember these CPU/HSF combos are the same ones that go
into OEM cases and everyone knows how crappy those are at
cooling...
