Howdy,

I've sen people mention websites that rank all the CPUs to compare them to see which are faster and slower and such. Can anyone recommend me a site like that?

I want to compare out older laptops with the current gen to see what makes sense to upgrade.

My wife has a Toshiba Laptop with a Celeron M 430(1.73GHz) and I don't know how that compares to i3s, i5s, etc.

I have a Gateway with a Core 2 Duo T5750and also don't know how that compares to current gen processors.

Obviously we don't want to get new laptops that are the same speed as what we have now as there's no point in that. But when I see a deal get posted, I want to know how it compares to what we have now to know if an upgrade would be crazy faster, just a little faster, no faster at all, etc.

Thanks.

Here's a comprehensive chart arranged in "tiers" that approximate similar performance. Of course it might vary a bit depending on your particular usage, but this gives a good idea of what to expect. Also, they suggest that you probably shouldn't upgrade if you are moving between less than three tiers (i.e., if two processors are within three tiers, they are probably good enough where it's not a deal breaker between them):

Also, take into consideration whether you'll want to get a discrete/separate/powerful video card for the laptop.

Years ago when I bought a Vostro 1500, I decided to get a discrete Nvidia video card with it. Turned out to be a great decision as I can watch smooth video playback of BluRay or other 1080p video sources, even though the CPU can't handle it as video can take advantage of GPU hardware decoding playback.

However, a modern laptop should not have this issue right now as their CPUs will probably be fine to play back video without relying on a GPU/discrete video card's horsepower. But, what about in 2 years from now, maybe something different comes out on the web and you'll wish you had a powerful GPU to work on it. I mean, that's the position I was in when I bought my laptop, I had no idea that 1080p video playback, or streaming flash video, would be a popular thing when I bought it, and if I didn't have the discrete GPU, I would have had to sell my laptop. Anyway, just another thing to consider.

What's even more amazing (and why I didn't mention it) is that neither of the processors he's interested in comparing (Celeron M 430/Core 2 Duo T5750) are on AT Bench...
