Just called a few supplier friends of mine and they just so happen to be at the very place that I applied for last week. They gave me a name and said that they would personally hand deliver a personalized cover letter and recommendation to the head of Engineering there. At least it's a good start.

LOL, plant manager just sent me an e-mail asking if I could go on the road next week because the plant (production) is in serious trouble and REALLY needs me. Pretty funny for a plant (the tooling plant where I worked for 17 years) that is being closed down because we are not needed, lol!

Good luck. I'm surprised people are still getting laid off. I thought things were finally starting to pick back up.

We also had people with 30 years let go yesterday and received nothing because they were laid off before May 1, 09 and that was the cutoff date for severance.

laid off yesterday, but no serverance because they were laid off before May 1, 09 ?

[q]The bastards only offered severance to 22 of the 40 people because they said that the 18 were laid off too long to quality! [/q]

dont understand either???

They were probably "laid off" officially last year, but didn't stop work until yesterday. Just another way for them to screw people out of severance.

Most high level professional consultants (physicians, lawyers, accoutants) charge $3-500/hr for consultation fees. Ask in that range.

I was looking at a M.D.'s ( D.O.) quote sheet yesterday regarding court appearances; I think he charged $10,000.00 per day if testifying out of town. That didn't even cover travel costs of $150/hour.

They were on laid off last year but it was a layoff with definite recall. They were still considered "active" as far as retirement and other benefits (not medical). They were "terminated" yesterday with nothing other than their previous retirement years. If they had 30 years service and were 55 years old, they could retire. Otherwise, they could not retire or receive a severance. There were a few that had found temporary jobs and even missed out on working hours to show up for the meeting. Got nothing and lost money too.

Pretty sad.

I asked why they want me to go on the road next week and why couldn't the guy they were keeping until the end of the year (took my offered spot) and the plant manager told me that another plant had already requested him for the next month, lol. But....we're not needed anymore. heh.

Engineer,

I've been in that situation, so I totally know what it feels like to see a plant shutdown. I worked as a process engineer for "thin film" manufacturing facility that was formerly owned by Du Pont. The workers there had over 30 years experience, and new management came in and laid off half the workforce in a day. Eventually the plant was shutdown, re-opened, shutdown.....sold off......etc

Its hard seeing very experienced people be let go based on the headcount numbers. To make matters worse, this plant was the largest employer in the area, and really decimated the economy there.

Anyways, Good luck on the job search. If you are really up for it, you may want to go back and get your PE certification and work in design.

Tell your ex-boss, you will not go. The worst they can do is fire you 1 week earlier than they had planned. You are already "not worth anything to them" or they would keep you on the job. They want you out, let the company sink. They created the problem, let them fix it.

Update: Just talked to the supplier friend for a hour and he told me that the job would be a perfect place for me to work. Stated he would write a personal letter to the Operations and Engineering Managers. Stated that I have a good chance with my experience but another company that does the same thing is closing and I might have alot of competition from those guys. The biggest advantage that I have is that I'm 10 miles away while they are 50 miles away.

Hopefully, I'll get an interview. I'll be sending a personal cover letter and recommendation letters to the operations manager in the next day or so. Keep your fingers crossed.

man that sucks but its very good that they gave you severance. I hope you take some time to relax a bit and then go at it. You seem like a great guy and I'm sure you won't be unemployed for long.

You old fogies crack me up. Take a fucking page out of Gen X playbook, and don't be tied to one company for your entire life. "I worked there for 20 years" really gets old and you deserve no sympathy.

Got it all figured out don't ya! :)

Hopefully by the time you reach the age of the people who "deserve no sympathy" you will realize what a collosal dumb ass you are at your current age. Most do

It'll be real nice when JS80 is on the Unemployment Line. He has no concept of the real world and how a person's integrity and that of the company he works for interact. People like him, can't hold a job long. Hence the turnover rate. I for one worked 33 years for Verizon. A very nice career, with a reasonable salary and good benefits.

flame towards JS80 edited out of respect for OP.

Sorry to hear that man. I can't believe they would do that to some of your co-workers. 8 months away from retirement and shitcanned? Can you imagine?

They're lucky the place hasn't been burned to the ground - or worse.

Don't know about burned but it's being stripped at an alarming pace, lol. Nothing worth auctioning off really. Just old mills, lathes, drill presses. Not worth the time but they will do it anyway and throw away the rest. I would almost best that they would throw it away before giving it to the men. I have heard that they did this with laptops and PC's during the last cut...threw them out (after formatting them) and wouldn't let the people have them first (they could dumpster dive I guess).

I think good fortune has your back, Engineer. In the end I have a feeling this will all be for the best. It's laughable how your almost ex-company is already screwing themselves over by not having enough qualified people after terminating so many. Sounds like they're getting exactly what they deserve. :D

I saw an internal memo that stated that they wanted to transfer 3 or 4 people. Stated that there was no intention to "contract" work to these people as they wanted them to transfer because they would have a vested interest in the company.

The irony in that is that there were no people in the company that were more caring of or vested in the company than the 35 just let go. I've never saw anyone in the company as interested in it's success than my plant manager, period. Maybe that's why he spent 3X as long as a plant manager as ALL of the other current plant managers...COMBINED. Even as he is going out the door, he wants us to do everything we can to help the plants that we once served....doesn't want a single bit of tarnish thrown toward our closing plant. It was truly an honor to work with and for him for so many years.

Just received a phone interview with the company. Said that my resume was hand picked (along with a few others) from the nearly 500 resumes that they had received. Went well (IMO) and stated that a follow-up should be soon. Crossing fingers (please cross yours with me also)!!!
