Hi, I figure at some point there's the controlPanel/printer/add thing, but before that what's the exact blueprint?

SCENARIO:

1 NT4.0 Server
1 NT Wkstn Client logged into NT Domain.
1 HP Laserjet with one of those JetDirect cards in the back.

All three assets connected into Hub via Cat5.

I wish to provide the NT Wkstn with printing, but obviously NOT via a parallel cable.

I figure the HP needs a IP address, how do I do this?
And do I have to assign the HP to the NT4.0 Server first, and then from this Server, make the HP shareable?

There's also this business with "select available ports" when within CONTROL PANEL/PRINTERS/ADD...

I really appreciate some light on the entire process, thanks! I know it may be elementary for some of you :)

What are you asking, how to use the jet direct card? Might be easier for you to just use the parallel port.

Goto the the HP site and download JetAdmin. This software will allow you to configure the JetDirect card. The software will detect any print server card on the network. Your HP will show up as unassigned. All you have to do then is enter IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway. Its very easy and straightforward. After that the printer will appear like any computer on the network. The parallel connection is unused. All you have to do is plug the RJ45 on the JetDirect into any convenient jack/hub/switch.

PM if you need more help.

Oh, to use the printer, you just Add it like a conventional printer. Only difference is that you have to select "Network" instead of "Local" printer. You cen wither enter the network name, ie. HP4050N or do a "search" of the network. Then double click on the printer to want to install.

Again PM if you have any questions.

You can also do it this way....

JetAdmin is going to be the quickest and easiest way to assign the IP to the printer. If you can't do that, then you can use Telnet to configure your JetDirect boxes.

We setup all of our network printers off of an LPR port on the server. Just add a local printer and hit new port, LPR port, and then either put in the IP address or DNS name of the printer if assigned. Then use the port you created and specify the printer name/share name etc.

On the client side, just browse to the share on the server and right-click, then hit install.

Done.
