Problems with XP network

OK everything was working just fine until I went to go share a directory in XP and run the network wizard thing. I get a msg saying that I may not have sufficient rights to access the network when I try to go to My Network Places. It worked just fine before I ran the wizard... I could see my other two computers (which have 2k on them) just fine... I can't access my XP box from either of the 2k boxes anymore either...

What's going on here?

I have a similar problem with my two XP boxen. The main rig (with ICS, if that matters, but there was still a problem before I put on ICS), can see the other XP box, but the other XP box can not connect to shares on the main XP box unless one is logged in as Administrator. (I had this very same problem when box #2 was running Win2k Pro, before I upgraded it to XP Pro). If one tries to connect while not logged in as Admin, it says something about error logging in to the other computer.

Ahhh yes a nice simple fix to this problem! 🙂 Just disable the XP Firewall and install something like ZoneAlarm 🙂

Here is what is going on....I have this problem, some minor distinction between Windows 2K and Windows XP. Sets usage of Blank Passwords to deny or disable under XP by default, Windows 2k does not have this setting.

You can see other machines on your NTFS (Win2k,NT,XP) network.

In the Local Group Policy when you bring up your MMC under start-run, hopefull you have a console Snap In Created for your machine like you did in your Win 2K.

I am assuming that you have blank passwords for your administrator profile to access resources on your network..

Order as it goes Start--->Run--->Type in MMC

Once it pops up, go to file---Add Remove Snap In--->Select Group Policy--->Chose for this machine only (Also make sure to add Security Configuration and Analysis and Security Templates**)

*For later purpose that you might run into..

Then make sure you save changes to the console and name it something of the computer or host name.

Under Local Group Policy in the MMC

go to Local Computer Policy--->Computer Configuration---->Windows Settings---->Security Settings---->Local Policies---->Security Options--->

Then you will see from third from the top. Accounts: Limit Local Account Use of Blank Passwords to Console Logon Only...

Some people like blank passwords for their own work groups, I don't... I have many users for my machines..

There is a disabled and enabled setting.....click on disable for Accounts:Limit Local Account Use of Blank Passwords to Console Logon Only...

That way you can acess other resources from your Win2k Machines of which have blank passwords....I see people do this alot..

If that doesn't work, the gentlemen who posted those microsoft links might help...technet and knowledge base will help under microsoft even the NewsGroups...it is definately worth a shot..

Jeremiah
