Problems with XP and shared folders

Hi People,
I have a LAN at home and we guys are sharing a few folders over the network. My problem is that when I am transfering files over the network the CPU usage peaks and stays that way even after I am done with the transfer. There are 3 computers and they all run XP. Any suggestions to the cure.

p.s- I already removed the update patch that slows down the computer.

This is happening with all the files. Even though I am not running them from the host compter. I copy them onto my HDD and then use them.

Cheap hardware? Bad drivers? Lots of files? Small files or large files? Any background processes that are interresting?

Can't be cheap hardware for sure. I got a Anthlon XP 1800+ with 768Mb of RAM. On the other end P4 1.4 with 512 MB RAM and windows XP. I got a D-link 530TX network card and my roommate has a Linksys. I don't think cheap hardware is the problem.
