My sapphire radeon x800xl seems to have alot of problems playing some old games (nfsu2, hl1:cs). WHen i first play the game, all is well and smooth...but after a couple minutes or so, or if i exit and reenter, the game gets all jittery and seemingly sped up, preventing me from playing. right now im using official ati catalyst 5.8 but i've tried omega drivers and gettin the same results. i've also tried playing bf2 single player and im gettin about 30-40 fps on 1024x768 @ 75hz,high settings. is this normal for my specs?

any help would be appreciated

Try using catalyst 5.7, my x800xl works with 5.8 I can run those games easy, but yes your BF2 is very wrong..I play at 1280x960 everything high but no AA/AF, and I get 55-65 fps, sometimes 75+.

i see you have an X2......could it be that having two cpus is messing up the game play? if windows hasnt been sorted properly and it doesnt no what to do with two cpus? just a guess, a cpu problem would describe the stuttery/ sped up effect.

you've definately got enough PSU there, so it cant be that.

have you made sure that you've not inadvertantly set high levels of aa and af in the drivers?

are you aware of cool and quiet for AMD64 cpus? it dynamically adjusts cpu speed depending on the cpu load, it does this by adjusting the cpu multiplier. if youve installed this, you need to have power management set to "minimal power management" any other setting will lock the cpu at a certain speed. if youve installed it, and its not at the "minimal power management" when you start up your computer it will start in a low power mode....basically the cpu multiplier will be at the lowest set in the cool n quiet driver.....typically x5 or x4 so your cpu starts up at say 1Ghz, and becuase your not in the right power mode in windows it'll stay at 1Ghz until you change it back to "minimal"

this could also be your problem....if you have it installed and set up right, the fact that the cpu speeds up n down depending on load could be why your older games are seemingly sped up? older games dont present alot of load in comparison (tho NFSU is pretty new) so when the games at a quiet part the cpu is slowing down, then is being asked to speed up again when the action gets more intense and this speeding up and slowing down is playing havok with the game engine . just a shot in the dark

okay heres what i've come across...Using Original ATI catalyst i found that i couldnt even start bf2. but i tried running nfsu2 at (1280x960) and it did seem to work without problems. although hl1:cs still did have some stuttering after a few minutes of game play. so i reverted back to omega 5.7 drivers. this time bf2 did start. and i used a 1280x960 res and it workd perfectly fine on high settings. i dotn know why it would be worst on a 1024X768 but sure. okay then testing nfsu2, the problem came back again. witht he stuttering, and cs still has the same problem. all the aa and af levels are set to app. preference? setting it otherwise didnt seem to have any different effect. yes i am aware of the Cool&quiet feature, but it isnt turned on. so from my perspective, newer games, (bfs) seem to work fine, while older ones dont? =S still puzzled.

Disable one of the CPUs in your dual-core, many have reported problems running some games on X2 systems, solutionj is disable one of em.
