problems with video capture... no audio?

here is my hardware:

athlon xp1600+
epox 8k7a
256mb pc2100
bfg 128mb ti4200
sblive! 5.1
wd 120gb se
hauppauge wintv usb
win xp pro w/sp1

i think thats pretty much all the important stuff (but if u guys need to know anything else, i can edit).
i download the latest drivers & software from here. install the drivers, reboot, plug in the hauppauge, then install software. i connect the line out of the hauppauge to my sblive!'s line in jack. when i start the wintv2000 software, i set up the channels and everything is fine. the video appears and the audio is alright. now the problem is... when i go to record... the resulting avi file has no audio. i've been shuffling thru all sorts of properties looking for an option i might have set wrong, but i really cannot find anything. the only thing i can think of is... maybe its a problem with my codecs? i have some divx and xvid codecs installed on my OS... could that be the problem? help?

You need to go to volume control (double click the volume icon in the corner) then go to properties and select recording. You will be able to check one source to record from. Pick Line in or Stereo Mixer by checking the box underneath, and set the volume slider to maximum. On my computer the Line in records too quietly and Stereo Mixer is louder so I use the stereo mixer. But you should get some sound using either.

If you do not have a volume icon in the corner you can enable it in control panel - Sounds and Audio Devices.

i did check there to make sure it was note muted. but now that u bring it up, i went to check the volume, and it is pretty close to max... maybe one notch before. this is so wierd becuz i am pretty sure it's not that the audio is low (becuz i max out the speaker volume and i get zilch).

you can capture a vid file and send it to someone else and see if they get sound.

if they get sound then its probably a codec problem on your machine

edit: You can transfer it to me if you want me to try it out... I am a big pr0n fan so I have just about every codec installed- absolutely no sound issues with AVI's.

I didn't know you could capture digital audio with the Live! cards. You sure your sound is hooked in right?

Just a thought but, when you check a box under recording properties it doesn't mute it, it selects it. Make sure your "line in" box is checked when you go into the volume controls and switch the display to "recording". If that doesn't work for you, try hooking the out from your Hauppauge to the "mic in" on the sblive. Also, are you even getting sound out of the "line out"? Try plugging some headphones into it just to be sure there is a signal there.

To figure out which audio codec you are missing you should download VirtualDub and open the movie you are having problems playing. Then goto the File menu and select "File information". There you will see information about the video and audio streams. The important information to look at is the compression field for the audio stream. It tells you which audio codec is required.

i have the cable hooked up from the hauppauge's line out to the sblive's line in jack. when i am watching tv, i get sound. if i pull the cable out from the line out of the hauppauge, i lose sound. so i figure this cable is hooked up correctly and is a necessity. my recording properties all appear to be set correctly. i think i will try the virtual dub test to see if it is indeed a codec issue. thanx for all ur suggestions thus far
