I?ll ask the questions first and then tell what my problem is with Udate.com.

(1)
Has anybody else had a similar problem as I have with grammar punctuations in their profile section?

(2)
If so, could you please submit a complaint form as I did to the FTC? The more pool of complaints there are, the better chance we have of provoking Udate to refund our membership fees. Here is the link to FTC Complaint Form

Or if you think I should contact another bureau, please share it.

I encountered the following problems with the product or service that I received from www.udate.com:

www.udate.com is online dating service, where men and women can meet. At their web site, I can create a written profile about myself, so that other female members can read it. During the free trial period, I had no problems with the service. I think, maybe, at the fourth or fifth day after I decided to pay for the six-month service, I noticed their web site would no longer retain or hold some of my grammar punctuations, such as commas and apostrophes. Thus, some of my sentences looked untamed and childish. I notified them by email, but I didn?t hear anything from them. I sent a second email, and I received a response that suggested I remove some of the symbols, such as forward slashes or the tilde, since it was a stark resemblance to web coding, which is prohibited for security reasons. I complied with their suggestion. I removed all symbols, saved my profile, re-entered my profile, re-entered the commas and apostrophes, but that did not help at all. I still have the original problem, as the commas and apostrophes would disappear again.

I contacted them twice by email to let them know their suggestion didn't improve my problem, but I received no reply. After a third time, which I told them I want a full refund, they finally responded and told me the problem is with my computer system, not theirs.

To test their theory, I connected to the internet using a different computer. I logged into my account and added the commas and apostrophes, but their web site still did not save my punctuations. I reviewed a few other female profiles and notice two profiles lacked an obvious apostrophes (for example, ?don t? and ?i m?). Apparently, other members are having the same problem as me. I am fairly technical with computers and I tried many different approaches to resolve the problem, but none worked. For unrelated reasons, I formated my hard drive, but the missing punctuation continued to persist.

One more thing, I never had problems like this before. No other web site has ever given me this problem. I can always type in commas into my profile and their computer systems will save it. No problem. Udate.com is the only web site I have the problems with.

With the exception of one email response from them, they have not done anything to resolve my problem. The problem does not lie with my computer. I consider their web site to be partially ?broken? (other features from udate.com work fine).

Nevertheless, I would like to have a full refund, and I hoped FirstUSA VISA could help, but they couldn?t help because I agreed to Udate?s terms and agreement that FirstUSA doesn?t have to do a ?charge back? for me, even if it?s Udate?s complete problem.

July 9, 2001 is when I first paid the six-month membership fee of 74.95. I made contact with them in middle and late July, and early August.

In early September, I contacted them again about the problem and they replied by saying this (I copied & pasted):

Udate removes punctuation from its members free text, as in the past we have had problems with members entering dangerous coding. The only way for us to safegaurd against this problem is to remove all punctuation that resembles it. I am sure you can understand why we have to take this action and why it is important in safgaurding our site and providing the best service possible to our members. All of our members are in the same boat and do realise that we do not accept punctuation so therefor know it is through no fault of your own that your text does not contain it.

After receiving their honest and frank reply, I had no choice but to fill out a FTC Complaint Form. I have never done this before, and I really wish I didn?t have to, but what other choices do I have?

Here are the additional keyboard characters that www.udate.com will NOT accept in your written profile:
` ~ @ # $ % ^ & * \ | : ; ? ?< > , ? /

Here are the additional keyboard characters that www.udate.com WILL accept in your written profile:
! ( ) - _ = + [ ] { } .

I could live without < >, the pipe sign, and the backward slash, but not the commas, question mark and apostrophes.

There is one other caveat about udate.com: There is no option to disable their automatic renewal membership fee. Therefore, keep a close eye on your expiration date if you want to cancel your membership.

I have Windows 98se and IE 5.5 if that means anything.

Here's the problems I see:
1:

<< I decided to pay for the six-month service >>

2: Udate.com

Past that, continueto file whatever complaints you can to get them to refund your money. Make sure that the terms you agreed were met and even where the terms of service might overstep common law. Call, write, do whatever you need to do to get to a person who will work with and who can understand your position.
