Problems with Ubuntu installation

I tried to install the live CD version of Ubuntu this weekend.

It did not go very well, in that, I could not get it to recognize my modem and thus I could not get on-line. I sought help on the Unbuntu forum but none of the suggestions I got there would resolve the problem.

Also, I did not get any sound either. I never got a chance to work on that problem.

At this point I am looking for suggestions of another distribution of Linux which will be able to either install the software needed for all the components on my system or at least one that has some type of on-line support that would be able to get me info on how to resolve any outstanding installation issues.

You probably will have to purchase a retail version of a Distribution. Though it would be helpful to know which modem you have so others could chime in.
 
It is a U.S. Robotics/3com Model 5610B "Performance Pro" hardware modem - 56k - V92.

Is it possible that the software I need for this would be on the 3Com site ?

I have been there a number of times in the past and I don't remember ever seeing anything regarding drivers, etc. for Linux O/S.

And even if I can find the software that is needed to make the modem work, how would it be possible to incorporate that software into the Ubuntu Live CD ?

I see that the 3com link refers to Red Hat.

Does this mean that this file can also be used "AS IS", in a Ubuntu linux environment ?

And if so, since I am using the LIVE CD version of Ubuntu, how do I go about getting this installed within the LIVE CD version of Ubuntu ?

Can this file from 3com be downloaded on a windows workstation and then be used in conjuction with the LIVE CD Ubuntu session on the other workstation via a floppy disk or other drive media on the session workstation ?

 
According to link3 it should "just work" as long as you use the right serial port. You probably just need to figure out which port it is and use that.

You should see something like:

Serial driver version 5.05c (2001-07-08) with MANY_PORTS SHARE_IRQ SERIAL_PCI enabled
ttyS00 at 0x03f8 (irq = 4) is a 16550A

during bootup, but I think Ubuntu hides kernel boot messages so you might have to run 'dmesg' to see if it's detected.
 
Would it not be the same port that is used in Windows ? I tried the com3 that is used in Windows and that did not work and I also tried com4 and that did not work. Should I try com1 & 2 ?
 
Try this distro

It set everything up for me, including my DSL connection, sound, and video...You can download it and burn the iso onto a cd and actually try it out running it soley from the CD first...
 
Thanks, Skyhack. I think I will try that. After looking at the instructions given in the link3 above, I believe I would be reinventing the wheel just to get a modem installed.

Probably, but not definitely. It should only take a minute to try them all anyway.

Can someone tell me how I can go about downloading the PC Linux distribution mentioned above and get it onto a CD ??? The size of the image file at that site is 695mb and the software that I use Roxio version 6 will only format a 700mb CD to only 571mb even with compression turned on.

You shouldn't be formatting the disc, you should be burning the image directly to the disc. And even so I doubt choosing a different distro will help, but there's no harm in trying.
 
You should be able to download the iso, md5 or whatever hash against it, then open the image in nero or roxio(never been a huge fan of the roxio interface), and then burn it as a cd image.

Please tell me what you mean by "burn it as a cd image".

What I always use in Roxio is drag & drop, in which a CD is treated just as if it is another drive. It is formatted & then you can use drag & drop, copy & paste and Microsoft save functions just as if this is a hard drive. How is this any different from burn it ?

NEVER MIND, I FOUND IT. THIS IS NOT SOMETHING WE NORMALLY HAVE ANY NEED OF DOING HERE.
