I have a pentium II 350 mhz computer w/ windows 98 and 64 megs of ram. My problem began when i tried to connect and no dial tone was found. So i removed the drivers for the U.S Robotics 56K Winmodem, and removed the modem itself. I replaced it w/ an identical modem on a different computer. This modem works perfectly fine... however, it just caused more problems w/ the current computer. Windows loaded perfectly, and it found a new PCI communications device (guessing thats the new modem). However, i was not able to install the modem. It kept on looking for drivers which i did not have. The modem came w/ a cd and i tried using but that did not work either. Then i picked one of the existing drivers that already came w/ Windows 98, and when i wanted to install it, i ran into another problem. When it asked what port i wanted to use, the only choices it gave me was the printer port LPT1. I tried that and of course the modem did not work. However, the communications port COM 1 does exist on the computer, because it was listed under control panel/system. I also searched through the site of U.S robotics and looked for a working modem driver. i downloaded two differnt drivers, one was a Windows 95/98 56K PCI winmodem and the other windows 95/98 PCI winmodem canadian product. I'm assuming that the second driver is the correct one, since the first one did not work at all. There was an install file that came w/ the second one, and i tried loading it, but it said that if i had windows 95 or higher that modem shoudl have been detected automatically and therefore i was unable to install it. As a final attempt, i put the modem in a different PCI slot and followed the same procedures.
My modem still doesn't work and i'll take any advice. Thanks.
