Problems with TMPGEnc - Going from .avi to mpeg-2

I just got a new DVD burner and I wanted to try to convert a couple of my divx/xvid encoded avi's to mpeg-2.

My first try was a 93-minute 700MB Xvid encoded avi (audio encoded with mp3). The finished mpeg-2 file was 6GB in size, 270 minutes long (after the 93 min video, it was just blank afterwards), and no audio. Also, there were black bars on the left, right, top and bottom, of the video.

My second shot was a 3 minute Xvid/mp3 encoded .avi, again I got no audio, 3 minutes of blank video after the 3 minute movie, however no black bars, perfect fit.

Am I doing something wrong?

Edit: I was able to get rid of the extra duration of black video. However, I still get no audio when playing the final mpeg-2 file in PowerDVD.

Not sure but I belive sound has to be AC3.

AC3 audio doesn't seem to be an option.

Is there a better program that can convert .avi to .mpeg-2, or another way to get a divx or Xvid video onto a playable DVD?

tmpgenc has trouble with xvid audio.

this is what i do:

open avi in virtualdub
under AUDIO select full processing mode
under FILE save wav

then open TMPGENC
under video open avi
under audio open wav

encode

I also tried the demo version of DVDSanta and I was pretty impressed. It actually will convert DivX/Xvid encoded .avi's to DVD video AND then burn to DVD without having any other buring software. It also claims to work like DVDShrink, squeezing a DL DVD movie onto a single layer DVD+-R disk. It had zero problems with the Xvid videos.

The only thing that was a little bothering was the quality of the video compared to using TMPGEnc, but the difference wasn't too noticeable. DVDSanta is $30 but it may be worth it. I have a rather large collection of divx and xvid encoded video files.

I had a similar problem - I was attempting to convert a few TV episodes so I could author a DVD with them. Came to find out that either a) I didn't have the AC3 codec installed / b) it wasn't installed correctly. I reinstalled it and everything went fine.

I'm using D.I.K.O right now. Works great for DivX to MPEG2 encoding.

Yeah, I went ahead and bought a copy of DVDSanta. Took about an hour to convert a 700MB avi to DVD Video, and in about 5 minutes I should have Shrek 2 on DVD

I'll let you know how it looks.
