Problems with SCSI cdrom

I recently moved my main rig from a fulltower case to a midtower case (needed more portability). After doing so, my Plextor 32x SCSI cdrom seems to have stopped working - the drive does not even attempt to read any cd inserted - it does nothing. The amber on/busy light is constantly lit, and never changes.

Some more info:

- The drive is is the only device on the chain, and is terminated properly
- The SCSI bios discovers the drive on boot, and the drive is listed in the SCSI bios
- The drive is present in Device Manager, and lists no conflicts or problems
- Windows explorer sees the drive as being attached, and assigns it a drive letter
- I am able to eject the tray via windows explorer, so Windows is communicating with the drive
- My cdr utilities recognize the existence of the drive

At this point, I am at a loss. All signs seem to point to a hardware problem, but it just seems odd that it would happen at the exact same time as I'm moving the components of my computer. The only thing I haven't tried is swapping out the cable (because I don't have another one).

Anyone have any ideas or thoughts that I might be missing?

Could try taking the drive out and hooking it up to the power and data cables without it touching the chassis, see if it works then. The drive may have died, or you may have some stray voltage leaking in that new case which is causing a problem.

Or try ripping it out and throwing it across the room. That seemed to cure the ails with my Plextor 32x. (loudest, most vibrating drive I've ever owned, though it did read scratched discs almost as well as my 2x Mitsumi) Mine had a 'sorry, I'm confused, think I'll let this light blink until you power down' trait as well, though a power down reboot fixed it. Usually happened if I booted up with certain CDs in the drive or if I tried to read a damaged or poorly burned disc.

Oh, another thought occurs to me. Unplug the data cable and check for any pins which may have been bent over. Never know.

Good luck,
