problems with saving pictures in MS word

So I have to upload a copy of my transcripts to my grad schools that im applying to. The only way to do that is to save it in a word document. Thats the only format they accept.

I have 2 scanned pages for a total of 800K but when I put them into word 2003 it saves the file as 5.4MB. I can only have a file thats 1MB in size. What the heck can I do to get the file size smaller? Ive already compressed the pictures down to screen resolution.

It sounds like you might either need some OCR software to get the scanned documents in an editable format or you'll have to retype it all in Word. Do you have/can you obtain a copy of the transcript in electronic file format? I'm a little surprised that the Word document is over five times the size of the two scanned images.
