Problems with Radeon X850 Pro

Whenever I load up a game like Doom 3 or FEAR, after about a minute of playing the screen locks up, as well as the computer sometimes. I replaced my Radeon 9000 pro AGP card, which played these games fine without lock ups. Anyway I'll try to list the important info:

XP Pro SP2 w/.Net 1.1, 3 Ghz Pentium 4, 1 Gig ddram, 8x AGP slot, the old card drivers were uninstalled and I installed the new drivers that were available from their website. The power cord I have hooked up to it is also hooked up to the two cd/dvd drives I have installed - not sure if this could be an issue. Also I'm not sure what the wattage on my power supply is, it says "Peak Load: 400W" on the side of it so I'm assuming it's 400W and enough to run the card? I really have no clue what the problem is. Thanks.

might be the psu since x850 pro's pretty power hungry

but try dedicating the 12v rail to your card first

Did you unlock the extra pipies on that card?

If yes, that could be your problem.

400 = peak then divide that by root 2 to get RMS value. ie the equivalent DC wattage.....

I didn't unlock the pipes or oc it yet, so I'm guessing it's my psu since you say it's actually 200 watts... is there a psu anyone would recommend? I've never bought one before. Thanks.

Fortron AX450-PN... Cheap as hell on Newegg, and very reliable and silent... It will effortlessly power your system... However try to only connect your graphics card with a cable, not hooking some drives on that cable too...

I just set it up so the cable was only connected to the card, and it still ended up locking my computer up after about a minute when I went to play FEAR. It seems that it locks up whenever it has to render something in 3d for more than a minute or two.

Then it's just not powerful enough... If you say you haven't read any data of the side of your PSU except the peak wattage, then

1. It's not that good...
2. It's even dangerous to connect your nice GT to something like that...

Try posting the Amps on the different rails, and a brand name if there is one... Otherwise, just buy the Fortron, and you'll have no problems anymore...

Ooow :Q Do I see 8Amps mentioned for the 12V rails???? Man, that's suicide, you're lucky it didn't pop already... After all, you have a powerhungry CPU and graphics card...

I never ever heard of Pymax as well, so I would even advise you to not load your PC anymore, you're on the edge there...

You really need to buy yourself a decent PSU...
