my friends pc is only getting 70 frames per second in counterstrike and sometimes it dips into 19. its at 800 x 600
here are his specs
Ep 8k7a
256 crucial ddr mem
1.2ghz t bird processor
Geforce 3

how the heck is he not getting 99 frames per second
my friend has a similar system but at max res and he has a kyro 2 and gets 99

sounds like he didn't install all the necessary drivers (especially the amd agp miniport driver)

if Vsync is enabled, his max. frame rate will be limited by the screen's refresh rate (70 in your case). If so, 70 fps does not indicate any performance problems, but the refresh rate should be set to at least 85 to reduce eye strain.

Run the Sandra benchmark to see if the CPU is performing comparable to CPUs in the same class. Do the same for memory.

one more time...AMD AGP MINIPORT driver. the 8k7a only uses a via southbridge. the northbridge is the amd760 chipset. you can get this driver here from AMD. either select the correct miniport driver for the operating system or get the driver pack and it will install the proper drivers

it's funny how we have been programmed to just install the 4in1 drivers for an AMD system because that has been the main trend recently...

the v-sync comment is accurate during normal gameplay (not benchmarking, i don't think) but the lack of the proper driver is why it dips to 19fps, which it shouldn't do

so all i have to do is enable v sync and put the refresh rate up higher to get better performance?

no... disable v-sync so it does not limit frame rate to the refresh rate (with it enabled it will limit the fps to th v-sync) and please install the amd driver

yes, the amd driver is what he needs...and if that doesn't boost performance drastically then i will quit the forums right now!!! there is a lot of general tweaking (aside from overclocking of course) such as memory timings...but having the proper drivers installed is a must for performance and stability. while we're on the topic of drivers...what driver version is installed for the geforce3?

the latest nvidia drivers will be fine...i'm sure there are some geforce3 faq's around that will give you some settings to tweak, but once you install the amd drivers;) and everything is running right the extra few fps won't matter
