Problems with Office XP & Win2kAS?

My friend installed Office XP on a win2000 pro/AS dual boot machine, and is having trouble with the AS platform with office xp. I'm not aware of any problems with AS or does XP intentionally jack up your computer when it knows it is not registered? I'm assuming that Office XP does not have the same copyright/registering thing as WINDOWS xp. He said he's getting error messages with "RPC" and something about the server having to constantly reset. Professional works fine, apparently. I know this is kind of vague, but does anyone have any idea on this? Does XP "know" when it's not properly registered? As it is, it seems that it has relatively little copyright protection...
