Problems with OCZ Vertex 2 SSD

I just started having problems with my SSD drive. While using the computer it will lock up and I can't do anything with it. Have to manually restart it and it will work fine for 10 or 15 minutes but keeps locking up. I usually leave it on through out the day and there are times when I go to get on it and it will be at the screen that says the Windows device is inaccessible.

I installed CrystalDiskInfo and for the health status, it says unknown 100%. Wat does the health status mean? It shows all kinds of numbers but I don't know what they mean. It is not overheating.

Is my SSD about to kick the bucket?

Hi,

Try to check it with HDDscan diagnostic utility. It might be able to find errors and could give you the exact SMART info of your SSD.

Search google for Vertex 2 error. It was a notoriously bad drive. You are lucky yours made it to 2014.

Samsung 840 Evo has quite a good balance between price, size, and performance.

download OCZ tools and install firmware 1.37

...as well as swapping out the SATA cable, maybe. Additionally... if you have ANY data that's worth keeping, I have one word for you: BACKUP.

To be honest, though, I'd be looking for a new SSD. Crucial 550, Intel 530, Plextor M5P or M6S, Samsung EVO, Seagate 600...

This is the understatement of the century, take from a former multiple Vertex 2 owner.

If your drive is not failing now, the overwhelming odds are that it is going to fail shortly. Save yourself the trouble and get a new SSD.

I will download the OCZ Tool and see what happens but I have a feeling I will be wasting my time.

Data is not much of a problem, I try to keep all the important stuff on a secondary drive.

Now that I have been using an SSD for a while now, could I go back to using a standard HDD or would it be too slow compared to the SSD?

Well, I think the drive is toast. Now it will freeze up 2 minutes after start up. Not enough time to do anything. I guess I will be looking for a new drive. Which brand of SSD's should I stay away from? Is Intel still considered one of the best?

After I get the new drive, could I hook this one up as a second drive to access the files on there? There are a few files I would like to get off there but no big deal if I can't.

I love quoting myself... :D

TD has the Seagate 600 Pro 240GB on sale today for $120 shipped.

You can hook your old drive up and pull the files off it... if it will cooperate. I would be careful though, if the drive is going some of the data may be corrupt.

Can't go wrong with Intel but if it was me, I'd run a mem test just to be sure it's not bad ram.

How much has changed with SSD drives since they first came out? Do you still need to be careful how you use them?

Not so much anymore. You are running W7 so it handles SSDs pretty well, about the only thing you need to do is disable hibernate and check the size of your page file (if space is an issue.)

I'm still nervous sleeping SSDs (from the OCZ/SF2281 days...) but my Samsung is doing OK with it. Just understand that an SSD is a consumable part... it does have a lifespan, but by the time you can wear an SSD out in normal use it'll be time for something else anyway...

What is wrong with sleeping SSD's? Maybe that is why mine went bad. I have been putting it to sleep quite a bit lately.

I have a Vertex 2 120GB still going strong FWIW. Never had any issues with it, it's been a great little drive... Bought it 4 years ago for 200 GBP, quite expensive compared to what's available today. However I never put my PC to sleep cos it's not a laptop.

If I were buying a new SSD, I'd get at least 240GB, possibly even 480GB just so I could fit my entire games library on it. Intel drives are fine but the 180GB drive you linked is quite expensive for the capacity. There are decent 240GB+ drives available for less. The Seagate 600 Pro linekd by Charlie is still $125. Sandisk Ultra Plus 256GB is another good pick, $120 shipped at Amazon. No reason to pay more than that, really, unless you want more capacity, e.g. Crucial M500 480GB for $235.

If the Vertex 2 shows both a green + red LED, then, it is in panic mode, and well.. nothing you can do to fix it.
If it is a red LED, then, it is possible by doing a secure erase, might fix the issue for a short time.

Just a little update, I bought the Intel 530 series 180gb drive and got Windows installed and so far, it seems to be running fine. What kind of benchmark numbers should I be seeing with this drive?

I hooked the Vertex 2 drive up as a secondary so I could get all my files off that I wanted to keep. After being on for several minutes, it is still showing a green led, not flashing either. I assume that is a good thing.

Update: Now the led has turned red.
