Problems With Notepad

Hey Everyone! I got a little problem I was hoping one of you out there could give me a hand with. Here is the deal: I got a virus that infected Notepad. The only way to rid myself of the virus was to delete notepad, so this is what I did. Next I got a friend of mine who runs the same OS as me to send me a copy of his notepad. I placed this file in C:\Windows. However, what I found was that all the .txt files which were previously being opened up by notepad would no longer open if i double clicked on them. I could open Notepad and then open them, but I couldn't by double clicking on them. Also, if i created a file in notepad and saved it, I had the same problem. Any suggestions out there? Any would be great! Thanks for your help guys!

Well, you can change what program opens a file type when the file is double clicked. You probably have to tell windows to open .txt files with the notepad in c:\windows. try doing that first. I forget where you do this, and I'm on a restricted NT machine right now, so I can't exactly where to do this, but its somewhere in the folder options. Like go into a folder. Open the preferences/options/whatever it is menu and then click on the tab files of type of something. Then go to .txt files and make sure that they are pointed to c:\windows\notepad

Should be a fairly simple solution. Rather than double click on one of those text files, right click onto it and then choose "send to", and then "notepad".

If that doesn't work, or the option isn't there, then you have to tell me what happens when you do double click on the txt file. It should give you a long list of programs that you can choose from to open the file with..notepad should be one of those.

Does that make any sense? I haven't got a PC right in front of me...serves me right for logging on with a Mac 🙁

You have to change and re-associate the default program that will open files with Notepad.

In my computer go to view, folder options, go to the third tab (file types), scroll to text document and re-associate the default file type with notepad - which should be c:\windows\notepad.exe.

That will take care of it.

Ok. First of all, when I double-click on a txt file, nothing happens. It neither opens up or has a window that comes up asking me which application I would like to open it with. Secondly, the send-to suggestion doesn't work.

Now, I figured that file type association should be my best bet, so I check that out. However, I don't have any associations there for txt files. Hrrrmmm...I am baffled! What should I do fellas?

Even with the virus you got, you would have an entry for txt files. That would resolve that broken association by following my earlier post.

Ok, sometimes this works and other times it doesn't. Pick any *.txt file and highlight it(don't open it, one click not two). Right click on this *.txt file and select 'open with'. There should be a selection for Notepad. If not, you can browse to it in your C:\Windows folder. Make sure the check box 'always use the program to open this type of file' is checked. Viola. If you're lucky, it will work. If not, then you need to use the suggestion above 'view/folder options/file types/~'. That will work. Good luck.

>edit Whooopsie, when you right click you need to be holding down the Shift button 🙂 edit<
