Problems with new build

I just made a new build..some problems - first and foremost, a LAN problem- I can't connect to the internet.

p5wd2 premium
p4 640
xp90/panaflo
2 gb pqi power series pc4200
6800gt pcie

After I installed the drivers from the asus support cd for the marvell and ethernet, my network connections popped up. But, I got the "network connection is unplugged" notice. Everything on the cable modem was lighting up fine, as was the lit up connector on the mobo. So I realized i hadnt enabled LAN cable status in the bios or the 'onboard pciex GBe lan" or the "onboard pci lan". I did that but it was still giving the me the unplugged message.

THen I realized it was just saying that the other lan port that I wasnt using was unplugged (p5wd2 has a marvell and intel), So I disabled the one I wasnt using but I still cannot connect to the internet. But when I check network status, it says I have my IP address, etc and have recieved 120 packets and sent 0. So what am I doing wrong? How come its not working?

I also tried enabling the "LAN option ROM" under both the onboard pciex and onboard pci sections in the bios, but that didnt seem to do anything.


Two more issues with the new build/mobo.

1. The cpu fan connector on the mobo is a 4 pin connector. The Panaflo I am using is 3 pin and it fits and runs fine but I get a cpu fan error when booting. So What i did was stick the pnaflo into cpu fan 1 (3 pin) and stick the stock intel hsf (4 pin-I just set it off to the side since I'm not using it for anything) into the mobo's cpu fan connector just so I dont get the error message. Is there somethign I can do about this? Is there a three to 4 pin adapter?

2. Right now my SATA drive is hooked up as an IDE becaues I wasnt sure how to do it as SATA(maybe select AHCI instead of IDE). When it was formatted before windows installed, it only noticed about 131000mb, when it is a 250gb drive. After windows installed, windows is reading it as a 137 gb drive. Is this a bios issue or something?

Once you install Service Pack 1, it will recognize the full size of the drive and you will be able to partition the rest of it. If you wanted it as one huge partition, you're going to have to create a new windows cd from your old one and integrate the service pack into it. You can do that here.

I got my lan problems figured out. It was something to do with roadrunner. I gave them a call and they checked my modem a couple times and I tried it five minutes later and it was working.

That newegg link is good but I want a 3 pin to 4 pin connector for the mobo connections so i dont keep getting error messages. That appeared to be a 3 pin to 4pin(molex?) connector to the power supply directly. Or is there a way to shut off that message from the mobo each time?

So I guess its a windows problem then for the hd I guess I will just have to reinstall windows. I have never done that, so would I just insert the new cd and then it will ask if I want to reformat and reinstall? or do i need to reformat manually. How do I do the manual reformat? Do I type fdisk or somethign into the run box?

There is a way to shut it off most likely by turning off extended POST information or some option like that (you'd have to check your manual), but I wouldn't suggest it. It's nice to check all the info when you boot up just to make sure everything's going as planned.

That's a very odd fan connector. I haven't seen one of those kinds yet. It appears to just have a 12v, a ground, and 2 monitoring pins. I'm not sure where you can get an adapter like that, but search around and I'm sure some site will have one.

You don't necessarily have to reinstall windows. You only need to do this if you want just a single HUGE drive on your system. Otherwise, just install the latest updates and service packs and then reboot. You can then right-click on 'My Computer' on the desktop and hit 'Manage'. Select 'Disk Management' under the 'Storage' heading. You should see the rest of the hard drive that is not allocated. You can right-click that section and choose 'Format'. I highly suggest using NTFS for your file system. After you complete that, the drive will show up in 'My Computer' and you can use it like normal!
