Problems with my new TV

I just bought a Panasonic CT27SL-13 and I'm noticing a problem with the picture. Here are the pics:

The vertical lines in the menu are not straight. This is the menu from my cable box. I know it's not the cable box because it was fine with my old tv. Could it be some setting on my TV or did I get a dud for a tv?

you need to go into the service menu and play around with the trap and what not settings to make it look straigher, or you can exchange it for another one, and hopefully the new one will look straigher. No consumer graded TV will look prefect right out of the box.

Try turning down the contrast a bit. Do it while that menu is on the screen. Turn the contrast all the way down, then all the way up and tell me if you see a change in the geometry of the menu. (CONTRAST, not brightness)

Wow I just noticed that the TV price went down from 399 to 349 and the sony Wega I wanted went down from 549.99 to 479.99

I'm seriously thinking of going the Wega route.

I ordered the Digital Video Essentials disc already. Should take about a week for me to get it.

Getting a Sony will not solve your TV problems.

Just be glad your problematic TV is only a 27" because my Sony was a $2700 36" XBR that broke in 2 years.

I know it won't solve my current TV problems but I figure it's worth the extra 80 bucks to get a Wega. I did buy the 3 year ESP for 59.99 so I "should" be covered.

Sony TVs are crap.

My XBR is a flat screen Wega. Top of the line in fact, yet it broke and I am not the only one with it that had problems. That XBR line is plagued with QC problems but Sony left us out to dry. They were no help whatsoever.

My new TV is a Panasonic. So far no problems yet but this time I got a 5 year extended warranty for it.

I'm not saying go with Panasonic, just avoid Sony. There are better products and companies that stand up for their products out there.

Are there any tv forums anywhere where I can read more about TVs and people's reviews?

BTW: If you want to see how good Sony quality is, on audioreview, check out the reviews on Sony's S560D and S330D dvd players. My TV was a 36xbr400, you can see some of the complaints about it in there too.

Buy the 27" sony, you won't be disappointed. I got it a week ago and it's fantastic, especially if you have a 16:9 DVD player and can use the 16:9 compression setting on the TV with it. I actually got a fantastic deal on mine cause I ordered it online 10 days ago for in store pickup during thanksgiving to get the $50 rebate and a gift card worth 10% of the purchase. Total cost of the TV before rebate was $480. When I went to pick it up, the store, for some reason, said the price went down dramatically and took off $75 from the price. So, basically I spent around $310 for a top-of-the-line 27" FS tv.

Oh and check circuit city's user reviews if you haven't already, there are quite a few on every new model. I was planning to get the panasonic but I read quite a few reviews that criticized its red and dark colors clarity, so I went for the more expensive sony.

Most of the positive reviews are from guys who recently purchased things gushing about them. Give it a year or two and then see what people say.

I specifically remember someone on ATOT today saying his 27" Sony just broke.

Let me dig up the thread.

Edit: Found it.

"Picture" is your contrast. With the menu on the screen, lower "picture" all the way, then turn it all the way up. Tell me if the lines in the menu move.

Contrast (or "picture" in your case) is the "white level" and controls how brightly the CRT guns display the image. With some sets, if the contrast or "white level" is set too high, it overloads the power supply and distorts the picture. I have a sneaky feeling your "picture" setting is set at, or close to all the way up, thus distorting your picture.

If this is, indeed, the case, lower the "picture" setting until the geometry problems disappear. This will be the max point at which you can set that setting.

I turned it all the way down and it seems a little bit straighter but the picture is very very dark now. Brightness is turned up and it's still dark.
I think I'll return it anyways because Best Buy just sent me a 10% coupon valid for this weekend. That way I can purchase the tv from bestbuy by having them PM circuit city and use the 10% coupon as well. Plus the ESP is the same price at Best Buy but it's valid for 4 years vs 3 years.

If that is the case, the power supply on that TV is weak. I'd try a Toshiba, Samsung or Sony. In all the Sony CRT direct view TVs I've had, NONE have had a distortion problem like that. I've seen it be rather bad in the Zeniths at my local gym, though.

Of course, I've recently become a bit disappointed with Sony for a number of issues, but an excellent experience with their customer service recently has me reconsidering that. My Sony 21" monitor started a wiggling problem at low refresh rates (annoying when you are working with a BIOS). I was able to get a replacement from Sony with no problem. The only bummer is I have to pay to ship this one back. I'm still waiting on the replacement (it's only been two days since I called them). I hope it all goes OK.
