Problems with my new build

Hi all,
I built a new computer a month and a half ago, and the first problem was that it wouldn't install windows 7. It would always freeze after the third step. After trying two different copies from CD and USB with the same result, I gave up on that and installed XP. Install went smooth enough, but when I tried to install the southbridge chipset drivers it would always freeze. It would also freeze when I tried to install the graphics card drivers, and randomly reboot. After spending some time on the phone with tech support, and looking on forums with varied advice and no success, I just sent back the HDD, motherboard, CPU, and RAM. I just all the new hardware and set it up, and am having the exact same problems, minus the random rebooting. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Byron

Okay, I installed the drivers for the video card and chipset. Any ideas why Windows 7 install keeps freezing though? After installing those drivers I am also getting random freezes in windows now.

Process of elimination is great...you sent back the HDD, motherboard, CPU, and RAM.

You kept the video card and the PSU.

Now it freezes after just a few minutes of being powered up.

My guess is that it's the video card. More precisely, it's the heat generated by a bum fan.

Another possibility is that the first two memory banks are empty. Some system configs don't like that...according to the manual:

If two modules are to be installed, it is recommended that you install them in the DDR3_1, and DDR3_2 sockets

Hi Slugbait, actually its a different PSU as well and I tried the ram in 1 & 2 a little while ago, so the video card does seem a likely candidate. I'll try a different video card in the morning, will update after that... Hopefully it works.
Thanks

Well I tried a friends video card and I played around on it for about 20 minutes with no freezing, so hopefully that was the problem, we will see.
Thanks Mr. Fox and Slugbait for your input.
