Problems with MP3 quality--how to repair?

My nephew gave my kids some mp3's he'd burnt and when burning them on our computer, about 10% dont come through, just silence.
I assume this has something to do with the quality of the track but is there a check or repair program I can use, or a preburn setting?

I run Nero 5.5 on one box and Adaptec 5 on the other with plextor burners.
