Problems with Logitech optical mouse drivers

I just bought a Logitech Optical Dual Mouseman. This mouse rocks. Really fits well in the hand, and the design is top-notch.

One thing that annoys me though is the drivers: no way to configure the buttons on the mouse to act differently depending on the application. Anyway to add some stable 3rd party app that would allow that?

I know it's possible because my Kensington trackball has this option.

Also, the drivers are not that well thought out. I guess all Logitech mouse owners must have tried the "Web Wheel". It's not bad, but would be much better if it could be activated from the thumb button instead of solely from the wheel. But what really annoys me is that if you scroll a little fast with the wheel, the scrolling actually continues after you stop as if it skids. I uninstalled the drivers because of that. I'm now stuck using the default settings of the mouse (thumb button = back in browser, useless in other apps).

Anyone knows of a fix for that too?

thanks guys!

dumb question for me to ask, I know...but were you using the newest drivers available from Logi's website?
I'e foundtheir newest release of the MouseMan software to be stable AND feature-rich.

🙂 not a dumb question at all, but yes, I did download the latest drivers. They sure are stable, but feature-rich? maybe I'm mistaken, but all I found was a 3-step wizard that asks me what I want to do with the wheel and the thumb button. No way to choose the behavior depending on the application or fixing that darned scrolling problem (which doesn't happen without the drivers installed btw).

This will sound really dumb, but did you configure the mouse to move down a certain length after so many clicks of the wheel (control panel/mouse)? I think that the norm is 3 clicks of the wheels to 1 movement down, so if you are scrolling furiously trying to reach the bottom of the page then the mouse is probably skidding because it is catching up with you.

HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA you sure made me laugh with this one 😀

I'm not sure if I understand what you mean, but I did configure tweakUI (I'm running Win2k) to scroll 3 lines for every wheel movement. Could that cause the problem?

That was what I meant, in a round about way. I think that the normal setting is 3 clicks per line, or something like that. My friend has got this mouse and suffers from the same problem. Have you tried Windows Update or the Windows Knowledge Base?

AAAAAHHHH!!!

DON'T install the logitech drivers available on windows update, unless you want to lose your mouse pointer.
I have rendered my mouse useless twice that way.

I have installed the drivers directly from Logitech.

I found work-around for my scrolling problem, I enabled "MS-Office style only" and "scoll in active window only". It removes the skidding.

However I still feel it's pretty stupid to have an extra button that only works in my browser. I could use it for double-clicking, but I don't find it that useful. Any ideas?

That's the exact reason I switched to an Intellimouse Explorer 1-1/2 years ago. I like the Logitech mice but, in my experience, their drivers have never been very game-friendly 🙁
I tried lots of their drivers and the wheel would never work in games unless I killed the em_exec program. Even then, the wheel would only work in some games :|
I always wondered if they had ever fixed that problem.

My Intellimouse is pretty cool for games. I wish the sides were a little less sloped but at least all the buttons/wheel work in everything 😉

You can configure the logitech buttons to do whatever you want...although, not for specific apps.

Double click on the little mouse icon that should now be in your taskbar and all the options should be there. I have my wheel set up as "middle button" because I use it in games and the thumb set up as double click.
