Problems with Internet Connection Sharing.

I thought ICS would be a simple solution. I have a computer downstairs running Windows Me using an ISDN connection and a Laptop upstairs in the Kid's bedroom running Windows 98SE. I have a 5 port 10/100 HUB with cables running to both PCs

Finally after a lot of messing around I have been able to configure ICS to work. I can now access the Internet on both computer, all be it slowly on the Laptop for some reason.

The one problem I have is that the Client Computer (Laptop - 98SE) has no way of connecting or disconnecting from the Internet and no way of knowing if the connection has failed etc. Have I missed something or shouldn't there be a little icon in the Taskbar????

Refresh my memory - Is ISDN a dial up connection or is it always connected (like cable or DSL)? What are you using to share the internet (WinME doesn't include anything like that if I remember correctly)? There won't be a little icon on the laptop if you are using ethernet (ethernet is always connected, for example you don't connect or disconnect to it). I would recommend buying Windows 2000 or XP for your computer (not the laptop - Win98 is fine). WinME is a nightmare to use, so even if you put Win98 on it, your computer will run better. About the speed, ISDN is only 128k right? I used to share my 56K connection between two computers and it was sooooooooo slow on the second one. Slower connections like that really aren't meant to be shared(there isn't enough bandwith for two computers).

ISDN is Dial-up running at either 64K or 128K. Win Me supports Internet Connection Sharing (ICS). ISDN (64K) is the only option here (other than 56K modem!) and it is required on two computer so has to be shared. Thankfully it's not very often that both computer will be connected at the same time, although it is important that they are kept seperate (one used for business one for daughter for homework, MSN, games etc)

I have ICS working but there is no taskbar icon on the Client computer (Win98SE) making it difficult to control - I can't disconnect or see if I am connected etc. Is this normal if WinMe is Host?

Before you ask - I'm stuck with Me on this computer - next one will have a new OS but this has to do for now!

Since ISDN is the only available option, then you will have to put up with the slowness. If you get Win2K or WinXP on your next computer it might be a little faster. Also, if you had WinXP (not sure about Win2K) it is possible to connect/disconnect the actual ISDN connection (as you normally do on the server) from the client.
