I have an Iwill kk266
kingston pc133

maxtor 40GB 7200 rpm HD

WD 20GB HD (dont realy use it)

running win2k sp2

I had trouble with my user setings geting corrupted. So i reformatted. then used a dos boot disk so i could run the maxtor utilities
to run diagnostics and format.

reinstalled windows

now when I try to save something sometimes it seems to corrupt when i save it on the maxtor. and because i dont like to search around
for the windows back up file which prevents it from being overwritten, I save it to the WD and it works fine.

also I had McAfee trial AV installed , used windows to uninstall it. tried to install PC-Cillan and it wouldnt let me do it. cleaned all the mcaffe stuff out of registry.

I dont know if these problems may be related. are hardware related.

everything generaly seems to be working correct except the occasional corrupted Download on the maxtor. I forgot to mention that the corrupt downloads were opccuring on the previous instalation that went bad.

I apreciate any comments, speculation, advice or diagnosis.

thanks

Since you suspect that your hard drive is corrupting your data, what you should do is download the diagnostic software available on Maxtor's website and use it to verify that your drive is in good working condition. You also use a disk utility such as ScanDisk or Norton Disk Doctor and do a full disk surface scan to make sure that you can reliably read and write to every part of the disk. I believe that the diagonositc software provided by Maxtor is called MaxBlast, but you should be able to find it under www.maxtor.com

Are your hard drives on the same controller/cable? If you have one as master and the other as slave, check to see that your IDE cable is properly connected to the drives. It might be that the cable is slightly loose on one side of the drive or the board or both. If the cable is okay on both the board and the problematic drive, try swapping the ribbon cable for another one. It might be slightly damaged and causing minor problems.

If you still have the same problem after verifying that the IDE ribbon cable is ok, you may have a driver problem. Check your system properties and make sure the drive is identified correctly. Of course, it is imperative that you have your jumpers set correctly on the drives themselves. make sure you have them set for master & slave and not cable select.

Not sure what else to tell you, but if the drive checks out fine with the utilities, it is probably the cable or the controller having problems. It is probably not a driver problem since you had the same problem with your previous installation.
