Problems with external hard drive

I have a seagate replica external hard drive. Following the instructions, i have hooked this up to my new computer, which by the way has the same operating system (windows xp) as the previous one from which the seagate drive was connected by USB, and the new computer recognizes it. My problem is that when i try to drag folders to the new computers desktop it instantly freezes up. I have done this several times with the same result. What am i doing wrong or is there a better way to transfer files. I have also tried to slave my old master drive to the system but during boot up it says it has found the slave drive but before it completely boots it says there is an IDE error and to push F1 to continue. The screen then says "wait" but i have done that for over an hour and the screen does not change. Could i be slaving it wrong or do i need a program to do this?
