i just got an WD 160 gig HD in a Coolmax external enclosure with usb 2. The drive was supposed to be formatted to NTFS before being shipped. I am running windows xp with service crap 2. When i plug in and turn on drive, windows will tell me new device is loaded then the balloon will go away but it wont recognize the drive. the device manager sayts that driver isnt installed. then it will tell me that device can not start up (code 10). doe sanyone know what that means and what i can do to get this thing running? im going crazy trying to get it hooked up. this also does it in my notebook.

ok so how do i fix it? i went to website and downloaded drivers from there but still will not work.. still same message.. im not a big computer guy... so any help is welcome

ok i reinstalled and ballon popped up stating problem occur with installation. under device status i get this :This device cannot start. (Code 10)

Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device. well all trouble shoot tells me to do is uninstall and reinstall which i have done so many freakin time to the same problems.. what am i doing wrong? case of beer to anyone who fixes it 🙂

well i just pulled the HD out of the case and ran the model # and it is a Magnetic Data Technologies drive.. but i cant seem to find a website for them. anyone have a website where i might be able to get a driver?

Looks like you bought into a loser company struggling to survive. Their website is down. This explains: MDT

See if you can run the disk as an internal slave drive. That will tell you if the problem is the drive or the external case.

well it was sold as a western digital hard drive so i have already emailed the company requesting a refund. i will just go to micro center or somewhere and buy one. thanks though

i had that problem and it turned out to be an irq conflict. i fixed it by installing/uninstalling it several times (on laptop). also try assigning it it's own irq in bios if it lets you (mine doesn't). in my desktop the conflict was with a card in the pci slot so if you have anything in the pci slot try moving it to a different slot and that may be the fix.

its not the pci slot. i tried it first on the usb on the motherboard and got the samer problem. i get the same problem when i try to add it to my notebook. so it is possible that the drive is just bad and thats why it wont load the drivers?
