problems with DVI

I only have one DVI video card and one DVI monitor. I just started up my computer this morning to find that my screen was blank no matter what I did. I switched cables from DVI to analog, and it worked. Now, how do I tell whether or not to get a new monitor or a new video card?

I have an analog-to-DVI plug converter, so I did DVI video card to analog monitor and got no video. I tried to do analog video card to DVI monitor, but the ergonomics of the LCD won't allow it.

Can anyone help me determine whether or not it is the video card or monitor's problem?

That's going to be tough unless you have another DVI video card or DVI monitor to test. Do you have any friends willing to let you borrow one or the other?

I know this will sound silly, but did you check the monitor's input setting? I've had power-outs in the middle of the night that have reset my monitor to input 1, instead of input 2 where the DVI is.

That was a good suggestion. I just checked and I guess that's not the problem.

You don't mention what card you have. Is there a setting in the drivers to force digital output?

You might try reinstalling the drivers, but if the problem persists then I think you may have a hardware issue, either a bad connector, bad cable, or a failure in the card or monitor.

I have a Powercolor 9700 Pro. I will try reinstalling the drivers. Do you know where to find the settings to force a digital output? If it is indeed a hardware problem, is there any way to figure out which part is bad? I only have two DVI devices and one DVI cable. The monitor is much easier to replace (I bought it from Costco), but I don't want to spend the time to return and buy another monitor just to find out it is a cable or video card issue.

Mine is doing the same thing. I have a 9600XT on a Samsung 731b 17", and it refuses to show the picture iwth this RCA HDTV DVI cable I bought. I'm guessing it was the Analog monitor driver that was installed instead of the Digital one. Could be the cable too.

I'm too lazy to test it though.
