Problems with DVD drive and CD burner

Please help. My computer was working fine until a month or two back. But now I have the following two problems:
(1) Whenever I insert a CD in my burner my computer says that an error has occured (the blue screen with this message and other stuff like "press ctrl+alt+del to restart or any other key to quit tis program" comes up).

(2) Whenever I insert a CD in my DVDrom it ejects the cd if it is a burnt CD. It accepts the original CDs. The DVD drive, however, used to accept burnt CDs earlier and the CDs are good because they work well in other computers.

Any suggestions and help will be really appreciated.

Can you post the manufacturers and models of your drives?

EDIT: and also what program you're using to create CDs.

The DVD player when looked up in device manager says MT1316BBDV212B.
I have disconnected the CD burner. I will find the maual and let you the know the model number. I know that it is manufactured by LITE ON.
I use ROXIO CD creator or ADAPTEC easy CD creator to burn the CDs.
The burner doesn't take any CD now though. If I insert either original or burnt the thing mentioned above happens. DVD keeps throwing out my burnt CDs.
Do you think it is defective, or is it a software problem??
Thanks for taking time to help me with this.

Try uninstalling the Adaptec software. After the software is removed, reboot. Once you get back into Windows, remove the devices from device manager and reboot again. Let Windows detect the hardware and install the proper drivers. Once they are installed, re-install the burner software or maybe even try installing Nero. I use nero because it seems to be more powerful. many people I have spoken with also recommend Nero unless you are very non-technical, in which case Adaptec Easy CD Creator is your better option.

It sounds like it is probably a driver/file association problem, but it could be hardware. if it is a driver/software problem, doing the above should fix it. If you still have the problem after the above, definitely try another Burn program (such as Nero) and see if that corrects it. if not, you have a hardware issue.

The burner model is LITE ON LTR12101B
Altonb1 I am now going to try what you suggested though I am not sure why that should cause a problem with my DVD player. Do you think it might?

ALTONB 1 thanks a ton. That was awesome. Atleast my burner is working fine now. DVD player still rejects burnt cds and accepts original cds like earlier. I guess it just doesn't have the capability of reading them. I have also installed NERO now. Roxio cd creator sucks.

i have that burner. Great burner. I also picked up a Lite-On 16x DVD a couple of weeks later for a good price, and both drives read my burned disks fine. Your DVD rom may have issues with the burned CDs because it is incompatible OR possibly because Roxio was burning them in a...hmm...funky...way. (not sure how else to describe it)

You can check for a firmware update for your DVD drive and see if that fixes it, but in the short term, try burning a CD with Nero and see if the DVd drive can read it afterwards. if so, you know Roxio was to blame. let us/me know. I'm curious to see how it turns out.

Might not have anything to do with it, but try updating your ASPI Layer here or do a search on Google for ASPI CHK. Sometimes burners cause problems with the outdated ASPI Layer provided w/win95/98/2K.

I downloaded the ASPI file recommended and it seems that you have to have Adaptec software on your system for this to even apply. When I tried to install, I received an error that no Adaptec devices existed. (Which is true)

I don't think this is going to help at all, but if someone could explain further, I'd appreciate it.

If burning with Nero still causes your DVD player to treject the disk, umm...I have no idea. Your initial messages indicated that your drive used to accept burned CDs but now does not. That was a true statement, right? Just making sure that we're not attempting to fix something that has never worked before.

If I had to guess, I'd still say this is some sort of a driver problem, though I have no idea how to help you fix it. Under settings on the DVD drive (System Properties, Device manager tab, expand CD-ROM devices, highlight DVD drive, select properties, settings tab, and see what is checked off. On my Lite-On 16x drive, I have Disconnect, Auto Insert notification, and DMA all checked. Sync data transfer is UNchecked. Removeable and Int 13 Unit are grayed out. See if that helps. Under the Driver tab, i have the generic "No driver files are required or have been loaded..." The general tab just lists the info as (Standard CD-ROM Device). Yours may be different. I'd definitely check the settings tab, though.

I'm pretty much at a loss at this point as toi what else to suggest. (Unless you can give us some more info that might spark a few other ideas)

Okay, I am not sure about whether DVD worked earlier. I was sure that one of them worked earlier and tha could have been the burner. The burner now works perfectly after I carried out what you had suggested. I guess we should forget about the DVD. Thank you very much for your help.
