Problems with CD-RW

I am building my first system ever, and everything is working good except for one thing, and that is my cd rw drive :/

I have it pluged in fine ( bios even detects it ) but when i load up my os ( windows millenium edition. ) it dosen't detect the drive. When i go to "Add new hardware" nothing comes up for my cd-rom :/

I know this is a very dumb question, but any/all help would be greatly appreciated.

p.s. the drive opens/closes fine.

Do you mean the drive doesn't show up in my computer? Check the jumper settings for master/slave and if they are correct i'd try the other IDE channel for installation.

Is this a known working cd-rw drive?

bought it brand new today. It was originally set as slave ( didn't work ) so i set it to master and it still dosen't work.

okay please answer these questions:

1) is this a fresh install of winME
2) did you try installing the cd-rw drive on the other IDE channel?

edit>> the red mark on the IDE cable goes to the right side of the drive (when viewed from the rear of the drive)

One quick thing you can try is to (in device manager) highlight and delete the IDE buss. When you reboot windows should find the buss and then find the units attached to it. If it doesn't, and you have power and the IDE cables plugged in correctly, it's probably a software problem of some kind. Perhaps even a fried firmware chip in the cdrw. Just take it back and get another one to try.

It's not plugged into a raid/ide output is it? Some of these will not "see" an optical drive. One other thing is to make sure that the BIOS doesn't have a switch somewhere else to be able to use the drive.

I haven't tried what lucky9 said to do yet.
but

1.) it's an old hard drive from my friends computer ( wester dig 30 gb with millenium on it. it came brand new when he bought the computer with me on it.
2.) i haven't tried that yet because i thought the computer noticed it was there because it came up in bios.

Still haven't fixed the problem, but thanks to everyone that has helped so far.

go start, run, regedit. do a search for noide, if it comes up with any key that contains noide delete it, exit regedit, and restart, your problems will majikly go away.

Since your OS came from your friend's computer, I would definitely reformat and reinstall Windows Millenium. This will resolve your problem if it's not hardware related.

I just tried another working cd rom drive and it didn't work....same problems.

that's because the OS is operating in a crippled pio1 mode of operation and won't access atapi drives and cuts the access of hard drives to 16bit chunks instead of the usual 32-bit chunks, have you checked for the noide regkey yet?(see my previos post) I have done that to fix your exact problem hundereds of times(if not more) one win9x and winME boxes. you will also increase the speed of your system when that regkey is removed(if you are afraid to delete it all together you can change the data from a 1 to a 0 in that regkey, it does the same thing as deleting it but leaves the system to a point where an improper shutdown can trigger the noide flag back to a 1 state and cause this problem all over again.)

I did a search for noide again today and still coulden't find anything :/

I'm still waiting for another os from one of my friends, but if anyone else has any ideas they would be greatly appreciated.
