Problems with burning DVD's and CD's

Hello all,
I am having a lot of problems with burning DVD's and CD's in my last system build. I have tried an LG 20X Multi and Memorex 16X DL, both with comparable results.

They seem to read CD's and DVD's fine, but when I try burning I get:

a. Communication Failure
b. Failed. Disk at Once (or track at once)
c. Hangs anywhere from 5% to 57% for 10 minutes then errors.
d. Hangs after caching files and requires a hard reset. Cannot eject CD/DVD until after reboot.

Originally this occured with the LG, so I picked up an IDE Memorex 16X from OfficeDepot today, but the results are nearly the same. I have tried Nero 6 OEM, ImgBurn and Windows default (for CD's). Tried replacing the ATA133 cables.

For the heck of it after MS and CS didn't work, I jumpered the drive to slave and was able to burn a DVD. It took about 6 minutes to burn 45MB at 8x? Tried burning a CD, but no luck with it.

System specs:
E4300 C2D @ 3.15GHz stable
2GB (2x1GB) DDR2-800 Buffalo Firestix
Biostar 965PT TForce
Maxtor 300GB SATAII
Memorex MRX-510L / 32023292 EIDE
Windows XP Home w/ SP2
Firmware appears to be older then drive itself. Said it could not locate drive.
Windows updates installed, latest updates for system applied.

If anyone has an idea or suggestion I would really appreciate the help. 🙂

I suggest you try several different kinds of DVD's because some brands don't get along with specific drives, or you could have an entire batch of bad discs like I did with a spindle of Memorex DVD +R's.

I also had an NEC OEM 18x drive that would burn DVD's with no trouble, but refused to burn CD's ... replaced it with a 16x LiteOn & have had no problems since.

Thanks for the reply and information. Thus far I've used Memorex, Imitation, Sony, Phillips (sp?) and Comp USSR brands. I normally use Lite-On's so with my RMA of the LG I replaced it for one, just waiting on them to send.
