problems with barton 2500

ok, i just got all new stuff for a computer that i just put together. the processor is an athlon xp 2500+ barton, soltek SL-75FRN2-RL mobo, and 2x512MB geil pc3200 are the main of it. i put it all together and it boots up showing 1100mhz. i let it go and install xp and what not. when i restart and put it up to the 1.833 mhz it supposed to be at (166x11), it then posts as a 2500+ but it will either restart as soon as it gets to windows or it'll let me get in but restart once any strain is put on the pc, such as installing software or opening programs. any explanation as to what is causing this? this is my first time changing fsb and multipliers so i don't know if there's some sort of ratio to keep it near when setting it. i would think that it would at least run at stock speed, lol. thanks for any help.

Default voltage is 1.650 volts... check your voltage to make sure it's set right, and check what it actually is to make sure that your motherboard isn't undervolting it by a significant amount. Also might wanna try the RAM in single channel rather than dual channel, just to eliminate that as a possibility. Geil RAM isn't known for it's compatability with nForce2 motherboards.

Also, try bump the memory voltage to 2.7 volts. It's best to run it at PC2700 speed so it's synchronous with the CPU's FSB, too.

ok, i moved the memory sticks into slot 1 and 2. the fsb is 166 with a multiplier of 11. forced the core voltage to 1.650 and the dimm voltage to 2.7. when it posts, it shows it as a 2500+ and the memory frequency is at 166mhz. is still crashes when i try to load up a game (bf1942) and sometimes when it gets to windows still. all the options under bios are set to optional and not aggressive, turbo, etc. any more ideas? thanks for the help so far. i thought it was working as it was half way through loading a map for 1942 but then it restarted.

right now i have it running at 1333mhz and just played bf1942, the core temp is 40c, so i don't think temperature is an issue. i just wish i could get this figured out.

Check your manual and see if there is a jumper on the mobo that may not be set right. If that's ok and if the bios settings are correct, sounds like a heat problem.

There is a jumper to on the the 75FRN2-RL near the socket that you can set to 166. Do that.

Hey you got ripped off. GeIL is bad with nForce2. Go get some new RAM that will work properly without high voltages/modding of the motherboard.

yeah, i had the jumper set to 166/200 fsb and it's still freakin out. i have it kind of stable, but i'm having to throw voltage at the memory, so i think i'll return these and look into some new stuff. any suggestions?

corsair, crucial, anything other than OCZ and GeIL should do you good. If you were into Intel systems I would highly recommend OCZ and GeIL over the other stuff, but that's only with Intel and high volts.

I disagree. My OCZ ram has taken everything I can throw at it, and never had a single problem.

I guess this one is hit or miss. I have GeIL 3500 running at 210 right now on my NFS 2.0 and it is solid as a rock!
