A friend of mine is having some problems with her computer, and apparantly I know about computers so she has asked for my assistance.

The symptoms are:

freezing
usb problems
something wrong with the video card
won't play dvds
says something is wrong in the bios

the specs are

athlon 1333
asus a7v-133
768 mb pc133
ati radeon ve
maxtor 40gb 7200rpm
sb pci128
pioneer dvd 16x

If some knowledgeable people could provide me with some general things to check that might be know issues with this configuration, your help would be greatly appreciated.

Hehe..
<< says something is wrong in the bios,

This is actually funny.
You can't really expect someone to help you with this unless you list actual problems, like "the computer freezes when I try to switch to 800x600x32", or "the program that playes DVD movies crashes".

Also, she cannot possibly have PC133 RAM because Athlon 1.33 GHz takes PC2100 RAM. There are no other apparent issues with the system. Try being more specific about the problems, and also you can try the "Technical Support" forum.

** Edit: if she bought that system assembled, she should try contacting that company to have their testicles removed for such a sh|tty job :)

Ahhh...no. The CPU has nothing to do with the choice of memory. That's determined by what motherboard you're using, and the 1.3Ghz Athlon will fit on boards with chipsets as old as the KT133 (PC100).

As far as freezing, when does it freeze? During startup? What apps are running when it freezes? What is the BIOS saying? What do you mean by USB problem? What's using the USB? What OS? See a trend here...need more info.

I was referring to the fact that a new system with Athlon 1.33 is much more likely to have PC2100 instead of PC133. I do know that some motherboards support PC100/PC133 RAM.

win98 SE

This is just what she told me on the phone, everything I know is in the post.

I just thought there might be some patch or something out there she might not have.

The Asus a7v133 has the VIA KT133A chipset. Are the VIA 4 in 1 drivers installed? Which OS are you using? Win98? Win200? WinXP?

True, but that's not what you said. Besides. Kntx says she has an ASUS A7V-133. Which is KT133A. You should call her back or try to go over to her house...especially if she's cute...just kidding. We'll need the error that the BIOS is reporting. The only "patch" that I can think of that might explain so many problems would be the Via 4-in-1 drivers. Try to find out if she has them installed.

I've read that Win98 can't use more than 512 MB of memory.

No, Win98 can address up to 4GB of memory, but you won't find a board with enough DIMMS, and Win98 seems to handle more than 512MB poorly when compared with W2K or Win XP. Win98 and memory

***MORON ALERT***

C'mon man, geez... it's an A7N-133 for christ sake! KT133A board. Duh-ness.

PICS PICS PICS!!!!

Anyway, a lot of those issues seem like it needs 4in1's AND the latest drivers for her video card from ATi. If that clears the probs then cool, if not then check to make sure she has at least a recent version of the A7V-133's BIOS.

PICS PICS PICS!!!!

Not to be a jerk...but did you build the system for her? By those specs either someone custom built it for her, which I would assume knew enough to use the Via 4 in 1's, or you built it and dunno what they were. ;)
