Problems with AT&T DSL & router

I received a Siemens DSL modem from them, and i am using a Netgear FRP114(iirc, its the 5 port router, firewall, print server). The DSL is randomly dropping. The red light comes on the modem like it isn't intiating with AT&T.

When I first set this up, I couldn't get it to work with the router. I then set up the PPoE on the modem as off and used it as a bridge. I had all the login information on the router set up and it worked for about a day then stopped.

Then i changed it back to PPoE on the Modem and set the router just back to the normal settings. It worked for about a day or 2 and dropped.

When it drops i usually unhook everything and then connect my laptop directly to the DSL modem. I then log into the modem and check to see if it is connected to SBC, which it is. Then about a few mins later the Red light goes off and the DSL works.

This is really a PITA to explain to some foreign person over the phone and even more annoying when they want you to , check all the connections, then restart the modem, then check the connections again. Usually by this time it starts workin again.

Do you guys think this is on AT&T/SBC side, or is my modem a POS

I would leave a computer hooked direct to the modem with some sort of script to log if internet goes down (I had a cron job that would send 3 pings to google every 5 minutes, and dump to a log if they all failed) and run that for a few days, to see if it's related to the modem/router combo, or the modem itself.

Well after doing some reading on DSL Reports Forums, it looks like i should try changing the router to 192.168.2.1, and Having its DHCP release IP's in the range of 192.168.2.x instead of the 192.168.0.1 i have currently, as it could be conflicting with the modem.

if the lan side of your modem/router is 192.168.0.* and the lan side of your netgear is 192.168.0.* then yes you will have a problem. change either lan address and you should be good. good luck

Well i just got off the phone with some guy that was reading a card to me on what to test. Supposedly there is line problems, so there will be a tech in the morning coming.

Thanks fer the link, i have been trying to find info on the modem.
Maybe i need to check on a firmware upgrade, as i don't remem all that stuff on mine. Mine is alot more simpler and not so graphical also. Everything is text, with maybe 5 buttons.

I just did a little more reading and found a link to Siemens site with tech info. to me it look slike the firmware that comes wiht the Modem and the firware that is downloadable from Siemens is SBC propriety and have almost all that stuff blocked. There is barely any options when logging into the modem compared to the detailed instructions about the router and all that on Siemens site

Well i got bored last night so i repalced the wall jack/plate with a new one. Yay now I got service. The guy came out today and played with his laptop outside then inside and also bumped me up to 3 since i was capped at 1.9 for some reason. He said he didn't see any line probs so it must have been teh jack driving me nuts.

Damn old ass apts
