8755c to be exact. I replaced the factory HD with a Western Digital. I used the system restore discs and everything appears to complete fine. But upon rebooting, it shuts itself off during the Windows ME spalsh screen.

Before I get jumped on, it's our churches PC, purchased two years ago. I do not condone the use of Windows ME or HP machines. I just need to get it back online for them. Anyone ever come across something like this? Suggestions? Besides build them a fresh machine?

Part of the reason he wants this restored is to get the applications back. Otherwise, I'd put 2K on it.

Well you're going to have problems with that restore disk since it's custom-configured pretty close to what the machine is supposed to have in it. BTW, I've tried putting Win2k Pro on an HP Pavilion xe813 (quite ironic, but it's the computer that I use for presentations and A/V editing at the church where I work on the audio equipment :) ), and it works great, except for an incompatibility with the Lucent Win Modem, so we just use an external 14.4 modem to download the occasional critical update when necessary.

Another possibility is if you can get ahold of a full version of the WinME CD for a bit, then you can install WinME off of that, and then put in your restore disk, but instead of letting it restore, just go into the CD in the Windows Explorer, and find the folders for the applications. You should be able to run their setups from that point.

Thanks for the tips. I got a reply from HP support. It was clear that they didn't read my message. Losers.

i encountered a problem like this about a month ago. upon reformatting a hd of a pavilion i attempted to reinstall windows ME using the HP disks that were supplied with the computer. it got all fussy saying something about it not being an HP machine. i'm not really sure why it does this either.

also, as far as using a regular ME disk and then attempting to pull the applications of the HP restore disks. this does not work either. or at least it did not work in my situation, it again stated something about "the recover disk is intended to be used with HP machines only". it's all scewy.
