Problems with an Athlon XP2000+ and A7V133

I just got an Athlon XP 2000+ and am having problems with it on my A7V133 Revesion 1.05
When i run the processor at spec (133 mhz bus multiplied at 12.5) I can't get through the Windows Installation. I get weird errors right after the partitioning and format processes. Such as a buncha messafes saying that fonts are corrupted then it changes to a black screen that has prompts you to remove Floppys and restart. I can set the bus and 110 Mhz or lower and it works fine. Once it gets up to about 120 it is impossible to get anything done. The Heatsink is a FOP32-1 which i know is not rated for an Athlon XP but it is running as cool as a cucumber so i don't think that is the problem. Any help would be apppreciated.

Being a former A7V owner myself, I have come to accept that they are not known for their bus overclocking abilities. Your options could be:

Run the A7V at its highest, most stable frequency (around the 110 range I would think). Then raise the multiplier to its highest most stable multiple in order to get the most speed out of that XP2000+.

If you want to run the XP2000+ at its advertised clock speed, you will have to buy another motherboard. Sorry!

This is not overclocking the A7V133 with run 2000+ XP processors at spec and are supported by Asus.
the origianl A7V does not support it but the 133 does

I have that board (A7V133) running a 1.4G T-bird @ 133MHz FSB. It's been a while but IIRC, I had to set the Vcore .05v lower than default as the default setting was +/- .07v higher (as read in the BIOS' 'Power' section). Another thing that was giving a problem was that danged virus protection (in the BIOS), so I turned that off. You also might have to flash to a newer BIOS if you're still using the older 1.05 version.

Comp625, he mentions right in the post title that it is an A7V133 (266FSB) mainboard... and I know the A7V133's support Athlon XP's, but i haven't had much luck with mine here at work, I tried to put a 1700+ in this mobo and to no avail, even with a new BIOS, I am not really sure what your problem could be, especially seeing as you didn't give too much detail as to what exactly the problem is (exact errors maybe?) and what the entire systems specs are...

Was this mobo running another CPU successfully prior to the XP2000 installation? what was it?
need a bit more info! 🙂

My machine specs are as follows
Athlon XP2000+ (this board was running an 1800+ just fine previously by the boards previous owner)
A7V133 Revision 1.05 Bios version 1008A (newest)
Geforce 2 Ultra
2x 256MB PC133 Infineon CAS2 DIMMS
all the Voltages are set at either the Default or autodetect.
The Harddrive is currently on the ATA100 controller that is onboard but i have tried it on the other controller and
it doesn't make any diffrence.
Whenever the bus speed goes over 110 mhz I get Genral Protection faults in the Windows 98 Installation
right after the partitioning/scandisk/format process.

I just found a couple of things on the net. One said that they had problems installing Windows with a bus speed over
100 mhz and when they finished installing jacked up the bus to 133 and it worked fine. Another place said that it would work fine if we did all the Multiplier/voltage/bus speed settings with the DIP switchs instead on in the bios and it would work fine. Any thoughs on these? I am going to take the processer to a friends house and test it in his machine tonight i just wanted to see if anyone had any other ideas....and just so everyone knows i may be new to Anandtech but I am no newbie. I've have been in the computer business a long time and this has me stumped.

<< all the Voltages are set at either the Default or autodetect >>

What if you set them manually instead (via dip swiches or even in the BIOS)? And have I mentioned that the on-chip Anti-Virus is a pain?
