I just had to re-install my copy of windows XP and thought i should install the latest via 4 in 1 drivers at the same time. I installed them and it seamed to have gone ok, but now everytime i start up i get new hardwear found and it detects Via Bus Master IDE, and searches for drivers. It can never find any though and ends up with an asterisk in device manager.

Any ideas?

TIA 🙂

Alex

Have you tried uninstalling them, then re-installing the bus drivers? I believe that when you run through the via 4in1 setup that when it detects the drivers it gives you the option to un-install them, then you just re-install.

I've heard of others also having probs after installing the drivers provided by Via on XP. Just use the native drivers included with XP. I have a KT7A-Raid and Win XP Pro and am using the M$ drivers.

Yeah that's what i told him as well OD.

I suggested trying a System restore to before he installed them, but since then he's also done all the 24mb of Windows Updates (and on his 56k at about 40k it takes a long time!).

Also he said something about mouse not working. Have you tried replacing the batteries or trying another mouse? I'll bring in another mouse tomorrow for you to try Al!

I'll also allow you to use my cable bandwidth for 10 mins at some time to download Windows Updates! 🙂

Oh yeah, another thing i remembered (as he might not be able to get here til at college tomorrow) is that he thinks it may be cos the fan on the north bridge died and killed it slightly....but if the amount of thermal paste that was on my kt7 (none) is on his kt7a then i doubt the fan stopping spinning will make much difference! But could it be a possility?

I had the same with my cd-rw, every time i restarted, new hardware found, but never found software for it. Had that stupid yellow thing in device manger. I ended up reinstalling xp.

Yes, the drivers come bundled with XP, but you can update to the latest Via's without problems, I just did it to mine (fresh install of xppro, updates, then latest 4in1's as I figured that the drivers xp had were a lot older, plus the latest 4in1's had some features I wanted. To date everything is flying smooth (knock on wood) 🙂 That's why I suggested he reload the drivers. From the sounds of it, he's got a fairly fresh load, why not just wipe and reload, load the updates and leave it? (or yes, do a system restore 🙂)

As for the northbridge fan, when I removed mine (fan was making noise) I took the hs off too, found that Epox had just thrown some paste at it--didn't even cover the whole area, and was a thick blob to boot--so I cleaned it up, re-applied the thermal paste, and installed a new fan. Unless he's seriously oc'n, he should have been alright for a short time. Hmmm, that's a pretty serious oc, damn dude, you may be boo-foo'd on that mobo 🙁
