Problems with a WD2000

Concatenation

My friend is trying to get some data off this drive. He tried hooking it up into his comp as a master, then a slave to his new drive. His comp would not boot up with the hard drive connected. I took it and hooked it up to my comp and it was the same thing. My system would not recognize either hard drive on my one Pata channel, no matter how I set the jumpers. So I moved his drive over to my sons comp, which has two PATA channels. I put it on the channel that did not have the boot drive on it, and it just froze when it tried detecting the hard drives.
I'm beginning to suspect that the hard drive is dead. It heats up but I don't think its spinning.
Any ideas on what might be wrong?
