Problems with a Logitech optical mouse

Don't know if anybody ever had the same issue, it's quite strange. I have a generic Logitech optical wheel mouse, it's very comfortable and looks great. It's connected to the PS/2 port with no adapters of any kind. However, from time to time the mouse pointer starts to 'dance' and shake in Windows. Move a mouse, and it's gone, everything goes back to normal. Happens when moving the mouse mostly, I'm moving the cursor and whoops it's not where I'm moving it but in some random part of the screen. I tried everything - various mouse pads, no pads at all, but nothing helps. Maybe it's a hardware issue? It's annoying the hell out of me.

Does anyone know how I could correct this? Thanks for any replies!

First you can try blowing off any dust or hair that might have caught up in the hole for the sensor on the bottom. It really sounds like a mouse pad / scanning issue (can be caused by little hair or something that's caught on the bottom). There is a slight chance that all the pads you tried are faulty. Of course there is the possibility of a hardware issue. You can try uninstalling any logitech drivers if you have them installed. If nothing helps - exchange it.

Oh.. and - a Logitech optical mouse with native PS/2 (no adapter?). First time I hear of one. All I have seen are USB with a USB > PS/2 adapter bundled. 🙂

Sounds like a hardware issue, clean the laser portion, try it on a black surface or something like and if that doesn't work, I would throw down the 10 bucks for another one....

Thanks for your suggestions, I tried them, but with no luck, unfortunately. The hole for the sensor is clean, everything seems OK. But I still don't get why I have this issue! It's not like it's shaking all the time - maybe once in 2 to 3 minutes or so. Strange. I'd get a different mouse but I like this one, the shape and the color (it's all white, no-logo which is rare for Logitech, and it doesn't have that red glow that irritates me b/c it isn't transparent). Please help! I wanna keep this thing.

What OS? Any drivers installed? Did you try it in another PC?
I guess it's just one of those things that where you have to try various solutions and see if anything fixes it. Maybe someone has better suggestions 🙂. Bump for you.

Well just had it happen to me. I reckon this is not your problem but I thought I'd mention it. Anyway... the thing was that I had left the Wacom mouse on the tablet and once I removed it the shaking disappeared. So if you have a tablet - keep the mouse and pen off it when not using them 🙂
