Just got my first 8500. Was really hoping to get it in and up quick, but... I removed my geforce 3 Ti 200 card and driver, restarted, put in the 8500, installed the official driver from the ATI web site, and then restarted... a no go. Got a black screen and restart after restart. Once and a while it would boot into safe mode. Once in awhile I would get some color blotches on the screen. Using a Cornea mp703 17" tft. It did not matter if I used the analog or dvi connector. Anyone have any suggestions? Maybe it is a bad card.

-Do you have the latest chipset drivers and BIOS for your motherboard?
-Any overclocks?
-Disable AGP x4, sidebanding and fastwrites in the BIOS.
-Try ATi's leaked drivers.
-Search your HD and registry for any leftover files from nVidia and delete them.

Look for Detonator Destroyer Utility. It is available at many Hardware and Overclocker sites for free download. It removes all Detonator drivers from your system so you can have a clean start at next install of whatever card you put in.

OK, VIA 4-in-1 4.37s (KT266A board) - check.
Nothing o/ced ... check.
xATI's leaked drivers - hmm, that or Omega.
Fresh start. No nVidia anything on here. :)

Disable AGP x4, sidebanding and fastwrites in the BIOS - what the f#@!? I thought the R8500 was a 4X AGP card!

Is this a common issue with R8500s (having to kill performance) or just board-specific? If it is board-specific, it better not be KT266A-specific.

No you don't have to disable 4x in bios. I think BFG made refrence to this to to pastorjay who was having problems. But you should disable Fast writes. Side banding I think is supported.

I also recommend going in to the Windows/inf/other folder and removing anything listed in there that has the previously removed video cards name on it. Boot into safe mode and make sure the new video card is the only one showing up in the device manager under video adaptors. Sometimes the old video card will show up even though it has long since been removed.

The R8500 has no issues with the KT266a.

I am using Win XP, and I am not having any success at using the destroyer. I am assuming at this point that it is not XP compatable. I am getting a new 8500 today just to make sure that It is not the card, then if it does not work, I will so the old reformat and install. I have to anyway because my new gigabyte 7vrxp will be here tomorrow. Then I will have to decide between the Gf Ti 200 and the Rd 8500. Decision, decisions...
