I have a 20gb maxtor, and I just got a new 60gb IBM. I want to put winXP on my new hdd and keep the maxtor for backup and such. But, I cant figure out how to access the new hdd. I tryed booting with my old hdd first so I could access it from that, but my pc always keeps wanting to boot from the new drive first. I think this has something to do with Slave or my IDE cables or something, but I dont know. If I try to just boot with my new drive, nothing happens because theres nothing on it. Anyone know how to do this?!?!?!

okay...its simple...
Get the new 60 gig Hdd..set the jumper to master....For the old 20gig..set jumpers to Slave..
plug the 60gig HDD in....but no the 20 gig..
In BIOS set
Insert windows XP cd into cdrom drive......
Boot from CD...
actually...tell my what system are you using..MB CPU current OS ?
The hard dirve has to be partitioned..first... using Fdisk.....you also need to set it as the active partition...

If you are using a new cable ..the Blue End goes into the Mother board....Then the middle connector is master and the one on the other end is Slave...but it does not really matter these days.....
The importnat thing is the jumper Settings on the Harddrive..

okay..sorry I am not being too clear here...
ok...
To know whether it has been plugged in properly...
check the following...
the new Hard drive should come up on the BIOS.....
if the comes up there....you have physically put it in properly.....
about jumper settings........look at the back of that IBM harddrive......see those blue things on the back of it which is stuck on the pins....
arrange it in the correct way..so it will be set as master...(see the diagram on the sticker at the back).

ok, so now I have the pins in the right places. I need to know how to format now. when I boot with just the IBM plugged in and try to boot with my Xp cd, it wont read the cd, it just gives me an error. So I think I need to format. How would I do that?

What need to run Fdisk first to partition the Hard drive first..
(1)Boot from the Windows XP CD.....
(2) use win 98 /winme boot disk.....the run FDISK..
