Can someone please help me out? I just put together my new Pro2-A and when ever I turn it on, it stays on for maybe 30 seconds then after that it just shuts off. I have not installed an operation system or even got to fdisk the hard drive yet. As soon as I get into BIOS and look around it just shuts off. Then it won't turn back on either. I have to disconnect the cpu and then the power will go back on afterwards. What the hell is wrong?!

My system:
In-Win Q500A w/ 300watt PSU
650Mhz Duron
MSI K7T Pro2-A
256MB Mushkin High Performance REV2 (128MBx2)
45GB IBM Deskstar 75GXP
48X CD-ROM
Plextor 12x10x32A (ATAPI)
3.5" Floppy
Creative Labs 3D Annihilator Pro (32MB GeForce DDR) w/ Blue Orb
Sound Blaster Live! Value
Netgear 10/100Mbps NIC
2 80mm fans

I'm not saying I can help(because I can't) but I would like more specifics. Were you trying to overclock at all? Do the LEDs say anything? Did you try starting with just the very basics necessary to boot the machine or did you put everything in at once?

No I did not try to overclock. Yes everything was in the machine when I tryed to boot. I am not even sure what the LED's stand for, but I am now having a feeling that its a cooling problem cause the chip smells like its overheating. But I just put a FOP-38 on there but the clip was a bitch to get on, and I broke a piece of it in the process of trying to get it on. So I can't get the FOP-38 to sit firmly on the Duron, it only can rest there since the clip is broken. Could that possibly be the problem? Cause the computer boots normal it just totally shuts off after a few seconds. I definately think its a problem with the CPU. Let me know what you think.

Look closely at the cpu core....Does it appear damaged after your attemts to seat the heatsink?

there's tons of people here that know a lot more than i do, but since you're slow in getting responses, I would say go find a working fan that mounts properly before you try anything else.

If it`s the clip on the heatsink/fan that is damaged I would go & buy the Taisol CEK733092 model since overheating can be serious & a heatsink/fan is cheap to replace.Worst case you might of damage the CPU,but you must rule out overheating first, make sure you seat it correctly.

Are the LEDs lighting up at all? There is a table in the manual that tells what each combo means. If you can't figure it out, tell me which LEDs are red and green and I'll decode it for you. Did you ever make any changes to the bios at all or was this your first attempt at booting? I'd try disconnecting everything that you don't need and booting with the bare minimum just so you can narrow down the problem, although with your chip broken and heatsink not seated properly, that is looking very likely to be atleast a problem, if not the problem.

that is def cooling or heat related. stop turning it on until you figure our why your cpu cooling isn't working right. whether it be your fan isn't working or your heatsink isn't touching the cpu core or whether your heatsink damaged the core.

Did you install the HS/Fan on the Board BEFORE you mounted it into the case? If not do it next time, its much easier!

I definately think this is a defective cpu. First of all this problem was happening before the clip broke on my oem fan, then I was installing the FOP-38 cause I thought the OEM fan was not doing the job good enough. Then after that the FOP-38 did not even fix the problem. Then when trying to put it back on another time I broke the clip. So I put the clip from my OEM fan on the FOP-38 and I applied some Artic Silver to the Duron's core. Now after all that it still did not solve my problem. I definately say its a defective CPU, also none of my other components are causing a problem cause they all get detected normally and everything works fine. It's just that after the CPU is running for a while the whole comp just shuts off. And naturally we all know that if the CPU is now powered then you can basically not power anything without it. So I am definately returning this Duron to the iCompz.com where I bought it. Besides I have a 1Ghz Tbird coming tomorrow, so hopefully that will work.

It`s possible you may have a defective CPU,when my own T-bird went faulty I started getting BSOD,Lockups,& the last stage was it would not boot pass DMI pool data screen, anyway you might as well try a replacement CPU.

A replacement CPU is definately what I am trying today. I got a 1Ghz coming and I will try it with that, if it still doesn't work then we have a problem. But I am almost 100% positive that its a deffective CPU. And I most certainly must return the faulty Duron back to its place.
