Nice of virtualgames0 to use "warranty" and "return policy" interchangeably. No wonder he got flamed the first time around!

Oh please.. and they both carry the same economical principle - to give consumers a risk-free purchase.
Maybe if you haven't tried to find every little thing to contradict me on, you would have understood that.
Okay, blame me because you don't understand basic English. I couldn't care less about contradicting you, but it's funny that you're still trying to convince ATOT that you were right. Thanks for giving everyone economical lessons as well. We do appreciate it.

Yeah, talk all the crap you want. It rings kinda hollow when you have nothing to back yourself up other than all the insults and name calling you'd rather resort to.

That's what the return policy is for...
Apparently ATOT doesn't believe in it...

I dont put hard earned money in a product just to return it

If you read though, Apple isn't taking them back. They're suggesting they buy new ones.

Thats how I got my Nano :). Someone returned it due to scratching. Since our primary use is portable music, I don't really mind. I'm going to take some buffing compound to it, though. Maybe that'll help.

Can't people just get, say, those PalmPilot screen protectors and trim it to the size of the iPod screen?

And, it looks like some of the people are putting it in their front pockets and then sitting. That's gotta be putting some pressure on the little guy. Geez...put it in a shirt pocket or leave it in the car. Or get a little case for it, do they make cases for them?

first gen?

i don't give Apple a pass that easily. how many generations of iPods has Apple created? 4 or 5?

i've said since the beginning, i passed on iPods because the finish gets scratched up so easily. now the Nano's LCD screen is fragile too? to me, portable electronics need to have some degree of durability. my Dell DJ looks just like it did when i first got it and i've never carried it around in a case. i've been tempted to upgrade, by how cool the Nano looks, but i think i may pass on the iPod again...

Scratches don't affect durability. If that were the case I think we would send about 20 Dell D600/610s to the dumpster because their cases are easily dented, scratched, and worn out.

I got my fiancee one and the screen has scratches on it and she barely used it.

i understand that, but honestly, the looks of the iPod are a selling point for me (and i'm sure a majority of iPod buyers). when i said durability, i should have specified the durability of the finish. once the player accumulates knicks and scratches all around, it becomes an eyesore. the only alternative is to buy one of those rubber condoms for it, which defeats the purpose of getting something so cool looking, imo.

In all fairness, I'm sitting here listening to an actual first-gen iPod (a 10GB Mac model flashed to PC), which still works, looks, and sounds great after almost 3 1/2 years.

If the Nano really uses a less scratch-resistant plastic for its face, that does indeed seem stupid, and begs the question why.

why?

thats easy. to save money. do you really think they are going to exchange them? one site said Apple will buy them back at like $50 or so.

seems good for Apple. sale it for $500(not sure on price actually) and buy it back at a fraction of that.

didnt they do the same thing with the IPOD with the battery?

Is one variation of transparent plastic really meaningfully more expensive than another? It seems likelier to me this is really just a product defect (assuming the problem is as severe and widespead as people here are saying - I myself have yet to even handle a Nano).

The Nano doesn't sell for anywhere near $500.

I can't imagine Apple actually saying they'd buy them back for only $50, when in most cases people are still free to simply return them (the product is still only a few weeks old).

The iPod battery situation was quite different. Initially Apple said the battery was non-replaceable, but heavy iPod users started experiencing battery life problems by about a year after the iPod came out. Eventually, after some consumer pressure, Apple implemented a rather overpriced battery-replacement program. Eventually someone filed a class-action lawsuit that allows all affected iPod owners to get $25 in cash or $50 in Apple store credit. I myself bought an aftermarket battery with superior performance for $45, so from my perspective I'm very pleased with the whole outcome.

just out of curiosity, was the user-replaced battery of higher capacity than the OEM one?

FYI, I'm quite sure Polywatch will take out these scratches. It's specifically designed for removing scratches from plastic/polycarbonate watch crystals, and can restore even a badly scratched crystal to perfection. Obviously it won't prevent them from recurring, however.

Most definately, in big enough quantities.

It can hardly be considered a first gen product, they've had like 4 generations of regular iPods and the iPod mini. You wouldn't expect it to have the problems you might expect from a first-generation product. And regardless, don't blame the buyer because companies don't test their products well enough.

Ths report comes not long after another site reviewed it and boasted about how reliable it was and how it survived being tossed out of a moving car and being ran over etc
